At first, I thought Amy might be a good, deep character, but all she's come across as, is a selfish little spoilt cow

Classic Amy in last weeks story ...

SPOILT AMY - I want Rio! We are NOT staying! Rio! Rio! Rio! (continued for 10 mins with a sulk and a strop)

PRETEND HERO AMY - Oooh big hole in the ground ... RUN ... naa, I'll be a hero and ignore the warning

BLUBBERY AMY - (cry cry cry) Don't let me die Doctor in this big hole I fell in to ... it's up to you to save me cos I messed up yet again (cry cry cry) - we seem to see this Amy a lot

WANNBE TOUGH GIRL AMY ... I AM AMY POND! LET ME OUT OF THIS CONFINDED SPACE OR I'LL SLAP THE CRAP OUT OF YOU !!! ... then back to blubbery Amy

--------------------------------

I know some fanboys like to get off on her legs, but I wish they'd sort out who and what she is, which in turn will help both her and Matt shine more as I feel it's not helping the show (and I'd hate to see her go down as the worse companion of NewWho)

I'm sure many will disagree

No she doesn't.

I disagree.
So, to sum up: if she tries to be heroic, she's wrong for disobeying orders. If she's seen to be vulnerable, she's a blubbering whiner. And if she's stoic rather than blubbering, she's being sulky and annoying. Seems the girl can't win...

Well I'm not a fanboy and couldn't give two hoots about her legs, and I think she's excellent!

Are you saying she can't be both?

but I wish they'd sort out who and what she is
Perhaps you could spend some time thinking about who she is and why she is that way.

You could start by thinking back on what Rory and the Doctor have said about her in that past.

OP - I guess you haven't met many redhead scots girls - "fire in the belly" is something of an understatement.

She is a very brash, hot and cold kind of girl who knows what she wants. However, if I was being sucked down into to the earth thinking of being suffocated would make me cry I think!!!

If I had a dime for every girl I met that I thought might be a good, deep character but turned out to be a selfish, spoilt cow....

But yet we stick with it, don't we lads?

Have to agree really. But then I've found most of the characters in 'new' DW to be fairly unsympathetic. Usually selfish or stupid or both. :/

Didn't object to Martha or Donna though.

Amy is the best a companion can be! she has so much feistiness and humour and appeal in her role, she's great! i mean i would complain about not going to Rio when promised! she didnt complain too much just twice i think! but she is a really great character and hope she is on the show for a while...could be the next Sarah Jane??
yeah Amy Pond is one of the best and brings a lot to the role i have found that Rose and Martha haven't (dont get me wrong i like them but i don't appeal to them!) Amy is a great character that will develop more and more through her experiences, she doesnt hide away into the background at all she's always in the forefront and i cannot get enough of The Doctor,Amy and Rory at the moment!!! just brilliant!

Hm, Martha certainly wasn't either, guess that's why I liked her, with Donna it's a bit of a stretch (Runaway bride!), but in series 4 I guess this is true as well

Overall, Amy is cute but yeah, she comes across as somewhat demanding/spoilt. But then a lot of guys seem to like high maintenance girls, for a time, at least

I think many people don't appreciate the relationship between Amy and the Doctor. They are both young (looking in the Doctor's case), so they are going to hit off each other like mates, so Amy willl be stroppy and forthright and will exert herself in the only way she knows - as an only child raised by Auntie (who????) in a small village were she was something of an attraction. Getting me?

In the case of Doctor's 9 and 10, and their companions (Donna excepted) - the Doctor was a father figure and one that was respected as a father / elder would be - rather than a mate.

Come to think of it - Donna displayed a similar 'mate' approach as she and Doctor 10 were of a similar age range - yet Catherine Tate was loved by loads of people - and I don't remember the same persistent threads "I hate donna" / "Not finding my Donna love".

If SM was able to cast somone in the role of Amy that everyone universally loved whithout fault - he wouldn't be writing / producing DW scripts - he'd be employed by the government to appoint our MPs.

Very much, oh so very very much. Especially as there's already so many complaint threads (including one on this very topic).

Even as it is he'd do a better job...

The government doesn't appoint our MPs. We do, in elections.

I like her more now that she has realised that she really does love Rory. Before I thought her behaviour a little odd, understandable because of her fixation with the Doctor, but still kinda odd.

I'm afraid she and Rory get on my wick - and I'm sorry if that bores some other posters, but I refuse to be browbeaten into only saying positive things about Series 5. It's called holding a different opinion.

Another thread asks what some of us find lacking in Series 5 and, as a fan of Who since the 60s, I must admit I've found it hard to give a definitive answer. The elements all seem to be there on paper - although the execution of them leaves a lot to be desired in my view - and Matt Smith is a superb Doctor, no question. But something hasn't felt right, for me. Something that's seriously hampering my enjoying this season as I feel I should. And as the weeks progress I'm starting to conclude that it's Amy. It can't be a coincidence that I enjoyed this week's ep much more while she had relatively limited airtime being buried deep beneath the earth in a glass coffin. Would that that was a permanent story point...

Much as I enjoy Steven's work, I don't think giving him sole control of our electoral process would be a good move.

And similarly, those people that disagree with you also have an opinion. You can't simultaneously protect your right to express an opinion while deriding those that express theirs.

What's important, for anyone posting here, is whether we're adding anything interesting to the discussion. Somebody will disagree, no matter what you post.

I can't understand why anyone would take the time and effort to tell us all that they're not sure how they feel about something. But then I get bored at threads that make constant juvenile jokes about Amy's crack, so who am I to judge?

We saw her in the first episode. Annette Crosby.

Come to think of it - Donna displayed a similar 'mate' approach as she and Doctor 10 were of a similar age range - yet Catherine Tate was loved by loads of people - and I don't remember the same persistent threads "I hate donna" / "Not finding my Donna love".
I hated Donna, but didn't feel the need to start threads about her constant shouting in a deepend voice and the obligatory crying that we seemed to get every episode.

I like Amy.
