Hi,
Hope someone can help. Am thinking of getting a new AV amp with hdmi sockets, as my curreunt one only carries sound to my 5.1 speakers.
So my question is does it have any advantage spending £300 to have my SkyHD box & stuff going to it, or should i stick with my Kenwood amp.
Pleae help as i dont know much about these things.

It's only helpful if you have multiple items with HDMI outputs, and can use the new amp to switch between the different items.

You need to be aware that the HDMI socket on a Sky HD box doesn't carry 5.1, so you need an amp that will accept picture via HDMI, and sound via optical or coaxial.

the sound would need to be sent via optical output, the HDMI's need to be connected directly to the TV (if you have a few HDMI inputs on your TV

It depends what you want? - what are you hoping to achieve?.

The advantage of something like an Onkyo AV amp is that it can act as a central switching station for all your bits of kit. Which may or may not be of use depending on how many devices you have or plan to have hooked up.

If you have Sky, a DVD or Blu-Ray player and a games console for example all with HDMI it may be useful to have them go via the amp. That way the amp is responsible for source selection so you always get the pictures and sound from the same device.

And on my Onkyo (SR507) is is certainly possible to assign both a HDMI input and an optical or coaxial digital input to a source select button. If you do so then it switches the HDMI input to the TV but picks the audio up from the digital audio input.

I have all my AV kit connected to my Yamaha AV Amp with one HDMI cable going to the TV.It works very well, so easy just to change inputs on the Amp remote when I switch between sources (PS3, etc.)
