In fairness, they had very little time to do it (there were only about five weeks from the ADWD final to the official opening night of
Joseph). Lee filmed the video the day after the ADWD final, and it would have been logistically impossible for him to film in different locations, given that all the filming had to be completed in one day (
Joseph rehearsals began the following day). Therefore, a lot of 'green screen' effects were used to compensate. Also, Joseph is a 'cartoony' musical, so the effects, garish as they are, are in keeping with the show.
Incidentally, watching both Lee's and Connie's
Winner's Story documentaries gives you a real idea of just how crazy their schedules were. Lee had five weeks to prepare (actually less than that, since there were a week and a half of previews prior to opening night) and Connie had eight weeks (probably more like six and a half). Lee also did the Diana concert during the five weeks leading up to
Joseph opening night! It really was crazy, and I still don't know how Lee and Connie managed it, but manage it, they did!
I'm glad they seem to be giving the winners much more sensible schedules (and coaching in acting/singing/dancing) now. It gives them time to iron out any kinks in their performance skills and get much needed experience prior to starting work on their 'prize' show (Jodie did a short run in the ensemble of
Les Mis and did a course at RADA before starting work on
Oliver!).
It'll be interesting to see what kind of video they come up with for Danielle. I suspect it will be something along the lines of ADWD, but then again, they might surprise us.
