Its bigger on the inside

So, as of The Hungry Earth, three new characters have entered the Tardis:

Amy, Rory and Meera Syal's character Nasreen have all joined The Doctor in the TARDIS, and we exclude River Song from this.

Despite a subtle hint at all if them, none of them have quipped "Its bigger on the inside". This was too the Doctors dismay and puzzlement in the case if Rory, which would leave me thinking it was an in joke with The Doctor trying to lead them in to saying it. He even says to Rory "I like the bit where people say it's bigger on the inside." almost with a suspicious look about him.

However, he didn't even aknowledge Nasreen's failure to say it. If it was a deliberate in joke, no matter the peril, it would be mentioned. This leads me to thinking there is more to this than first meets the eye. Why is nobody commenting on the size of the Tardis? Are they not suprised or somehow already aware?

Variety of dialogue.

I was surprised at her reaction to the TARDIS, 9.9 times out of 10 you say "but it's bigger", or something similar. She was a bit, "Oh well done for you, I see you decorated it to make it bigger. Must be the magnolia paint!". Like someone on DIY SOS.

In The Three Doctors, the second Doctor asks Sergeant Benton 'well Sergeant, aren't you going to say it's bigger on the inside?' Benton replies 'well, it's pretty obvious, isn't it?' Not everyone reacts the same way...

Wilf didn't say it either but expected it to be cleaner if I remember correctly

The reason Amy hadn't said anything was because she already had been told that it was bigger on the Inside, whne told that it had a swimming pool and a Library...so there was no need for her to say it, but her eyes said it all...and as for Rory well he obviously knew because Amy must have told him, and after what happend with Prisoner Zero, he had no reason to be suprised but instead did research...and I think the whole Doctor feeling a bit annoyed with him for not saying it was because he was trying to show off, with the bigger on the inside representing *cough*something else*cough*...so was disappointed that he didn't acknowledge it

With Nasreen, I think he was happy with her reaction of fascination, so didn't mind.....

Another thing, this whole not caring about the Tardis being bigger on the inside started with Wilf in the new series, because he talks about how messy it is....bet he would be impressed now!!!

Amy does have a it's bigger on the inside comment : she says "there's a whole world in here just like you said, I thought you were just a mad man with a box"

I love the TARDIS, I'd love an episode for nu who that explored some of the rooms. I like the new design, MS looked great in his aviator goggles.

This IS a good point, and thanks for raising it.

I suspect I'm Reading too much into this, based on his dialogue with Rory.

Also, Nasreen was quite shocked and in awe of the interior when she saw it. It was clear she wasn't expecting it, by referring to the TARDIS as a "pod" after only seeing the outside.

She didn't say "it's bigger on the inside" but she clearly reacted to the fact. She said it was fantastic or amazing or something along those lines.

Yeah, (as someone else pointed out) she already knew that there was a swimming pool and a library, but she didn't quite believe it until she stepped inside. To which the Doctor teased her with "Anything you want to say? Any passing remarks? I've heard them all!" knowing exactly what was going on in her head.

It's clear it's not the words the Doctor likes as much as it is the reaction. Amy and Nasreen both reacted like it was the most amazing thing ever. Rory didn't.

He knew it already from Donna:

Wilfred: Yeah, but is it safe? This Doctor, are you safe with him?”

I have a vague recolection of a story with Peter Davidson where he was trapped in maze within the TARDIS. If I remember correctly I was really excited to see other rooms but the whole story was tedious I ended up not watching the rest of the story. Then again maybe I dreamed it - I was only 8.

Does anybody else remember this story?

I LOVE the fact that they don't bother with that contrived and stale conversation any more.

A testament the skill of SM that he manages to write it in a new, and interesting way.

True Donna did tell him, but I doubt he took it in with the sitaution at hand....however even if he did take it in, the Doctor did expect him to say it when Wilf was looking around the Tardis, and got offended that he thought it was a mess

When TB regenerated into PD he spent the first half of the episode wandering round the Tardis. Rather sadly using the thread from his scarf to stop him getting lost ala Theseus

Rose said "the insides bigger than the ouside..." and her question was "its Alien..."
Donna was "that box is too weird" with the Doctor saying that "its bigger on the inside thats all" and Donna "oh thats all?"
Martha said "its bigger on the inside" after saying things like "its huge" and "its like a box with that room just crammed in"...and the Doctor mimics her bigger on the inside comment...
and already said what Wilf says....

So four companions there....looks like its a testment to RTD that he manages to write in a new and interesting way four times!!!!

if people did keep saying it, then the haters would moan about that as well "oh ffs SM is rubbish at writing, RTD was MUCH better blah blah blah" any excuse for a debate in the Dr Who threads!!

I think its always said in different ways, even if the words are the same....some say it out of fascination, some fear...and usually depending on the character...so therefore it will always be mostly different...

Personaly I don't think I can get bored of it...and we have to remember that for someone it will be the first time they are hearing someone say it in the show....so basically speaking what that first time viewer is thinking....

I guess Amy had already told Rory about the Tardis being bigger on the inside from the Doc's comments to her as a young girl. I get the impression that Amy probably spoke to him of the Doctor ad nausium!

No such story. I think you may bbe thinking of the first episode of Castrovalva, in which he spent about 15 minutes wandering around the corridors inside the TARDIS.

*edit: someone got there first!

Good dream though, in the Paul McGann movie didn't the Doctor keep the Master locked up in a room. I wonder what else exists in the other rooms.

No-the Doctor was transporting the master's ashes in a casket, so no lock required.

As for other rooms, in various classic series stories we have previously seen: the secondary control room, the cloisters, the sick bay, the swimming pool, a communal living area with a food dispenser and several couches, at least two bedrooms, the power room (which was disguised as an art gallery), a couple of warehouse sized store rooms, a laboratory, a boot cupboard (which was actually a Regency drawing room with a pair of boots in it), several wardrobe rooms, a room containing nothing but a mirror and a hat stand, a 'Zero Room' which was apparently a kind of totally isolated environment, a permanently darkened chamber where the Key to Time was kept, and what appeared to be several miles of corridors, as well as a room full of equipment banks and computers somewhere off the console room. We've also heard mention of kitchens and a library. And in the novels, we saw the library (which seemed to be infinite and to change location at random) and a third control room with a stone control console, as well as a room which appeared to be an open air environment, a grassy hill covered in butterflies. There are probably a few more I've forgotten, too.

Or so we thought. In fact, he escaped through (two) keyholes. So locks are a no-no. Better just, well trapping him with the Time Lords in the Time War...
