Hi everyone hope someone can help with this i dont know if it is the new tv we just got on sun 23rd or is it a setting we have not got right , but when we turn the tv on for the first time each day we have no sound and sometimes no picture just a blue screen, we have both sound and picture straight away on digital and analogue. After messing about for a while for example putting in a scart lead and disconnecting the hdmi lead and having sky play thru a scart lead (we can always get picture and sound thru the scart) then change the hdmi lead with the scart again we eventually get picture then after a while sound which stays fine until tv is turned off again, although if we do something different like connecting a usb device the sound and picture is gone again when we go back to hdmi, it is not the sky box or the hdmi lead (we have tried 2 of these) because we plugged in another hd tv into sky with the same hdmi lead and had no problems is it me doing something wrong or do i need to return the tv . the model is , kdl 40ex401

It sounds like the TV has problems with signals it receives.

I had a similar problem with an early HDMI JVC LCD TV. Pictures from our Freesat receiver via HDMI would always come up green, but if I unplugged the lead from the Freesat box and fed the XBOX360 into it for a couple of seconds it was alright...until the TV was turned off. then it was a repeat performance next time.
I think it was just a poor implementation of HDMI, but it was fixed by buying a new Panasonic!
As your TV is new I doubt it's an incompatibility of the HDMI, so it sounds like a proper fault.

I have just bought the same Sony tv and it has a blue screen if i turn the tv on and the sky box is already on - if sky is off and I switch tv on then the sky box there is no problem.

Did you get a solution or did you return the tv?

Do you have an old Amstrad HD box?, they seemed to have a problem with a few Sony TV's.

It could be that the HDMI connection isn't refreshing the HDCP handshake like it should. Doing an Off/On with the Sky box (or pulling the HDMI plug) will force it to redo the handshake.

I wouldn't rule out a fault with the TV, but the fact that there's a Sky box involved would tempt me to look at that first before calling Sony.

Sky boxes are notoriously flaky. Sky plays fast and loose with the rules that govern how HDCP should work. They are well known in the industry for causing problems. Try doing an update of the Sky box firmware. I've spoken about this previously and given full instructions in other threads here, so just do a search of this forum or go to the web for instructions.

If this continues to be a problem then it may get fixed with a workaround by Sony. Most often this is done in a firmware update. These updates are delivered over the terrestrial TV network. It is good practice to make sure you have an aerial connected to the set even if Sky is your main TV source.

OTA updates are usually for the Freeview tuner only, firmware updates for the set are normally by memorystick, or on some later Sony's a USB flash drive.

The latest range of Bravias will automatically update themselves from the internet if they have a network connection.

Mine has recently updated itself without intervention.

At the time the Sony TV is turned off was it left on one of the HDMI inputs?
When my Sony TV is first switched on it goes straight to the last input being viewed when it was turned off - be this Freeview, HDMI, Scart1 etc.
Recommend switching to BBC1 Freeview when TV is turned off for the day.

Also is your HDMI equipment turned to stand-by, left on or switched off at the wall socket at the end of the viewing session?
From my recent experience I recommend for your Sony is on a Freeview channel when first switched on then switch on your connected HDMI equipment as and when you want to view them.
The necessary HDMI hand-shake should be done at this time and after a second you should get full picture and sound through the HDMI input on your Sony TV.

As I have what I refer to as SKY – i.e. very old SD non hard drive Pace box connected via a scart lead, when I turn this off after viewing it does not automatically switch back to the Freeview channel originally being viewed before the Sky box was switch on from stand by.
In fact we get a very loud feedback noise which requires the mute button being found very quickly.

I would have had a Sky HD box by now If it wasn’t for the fact that Sky have given up showing any decent programmes, films or sports that I want to watch let alone pay an extra £10 for reduced quality SD picture on all of the non HD channels.
