Occurred to me that it might work to have an episode set in the Sixties that does a whole retro-Cold-War Soviet-espionage story. To the best of my knowledge that world never played much of a part in Doctor Who, did it?... what with UNIT sort of circumventing the whole Iron Curtain thing. It might be fun to see what they could really do with it now as a 'pure historical'.

Plus it would be cool if they could use Back in the USSR on the Confidential soundtrack... and especially brilliant if they had a scene where a Ukraine girl really knocks the Doctor out!


And have Sir Paul McCartney playing a British double agent!

Or maybe Tang Dynasty China.

The rest of the historical ones (Apart from 'The UnQuiet Dead') have been let downs. Maybe the 80s would be good though.

How about Ancient Egypt? We haven't had a full story
set there (apart from a brief trip in Daleks' Master Plan).

I don't know if people would like this but I would have loved to see the doctor and companion in a paraelle world during WW2 where basically the states are the only ones left standing aganst the nazi's (so stuff like pearl habour happens but far later and England has been taken over or wiped off the map ect) get a proper grim and distopia story done.

I'd quite like a Roswell episode too

Roswell will never happen because of the US series and the X files.

Equally cold war would be awkward because it's ambiguous.

It would be nice to see some scientists or engineers, instead of writers - Brunel, Archimedes, Galileo or Newton?

Wasn't there something about Roswell in Dreamland, the animated story?

I didn't catch it all, so I don't remember it very well, but I'm sure the aliens were supposed to be the ones who had crash landed at Roswell.

Why not have someone who can act and isn't in their 60's?

Also, how many scousers were recruited by the KGB?

I'd say Jeremy Irons or Ken Branagh.

Fifth century Britain as the Roman empire starts to crumble and the Anglo-Saxons start to invade.

Plenty of scope for moral dilemma, does the Doctor help the Romano-Brits defend themselves against aggressive and possibly genocidal invaders, knowing that to do so would fundamental change the course the course of not only English but world history.

'Bonekickers' had something on this...

I would love to see quite a few historic themes. Although the only ones that I can think of would be recent history, and maybe not suitable due to the loss of life. Such as....

Chernobyl - possible slitheen episode
Piper Alpha - any old foe would do
Space Shuttle Challenger - conspiracy therorist nuts
Hindenburg Disaster - nazi lizzard men

Weimar republic - the Doctor meets Christopher Isherwood

Already done - Dreamland. So far too soon for another Roswell story.

Weimar Republic could be interesting. What about Occupied Europe? Plenty of scope for drama. Love the idea of Cold War espionage!

Henry VIII is an obvious one. He's bound to crop up, sooner or later.

I don't think the historicals have been poor. Unquiet Dead was magnificent. Idiot's Lantern was a hoot, and I don't see why people have a problem with it. Shakespeare Code was fun. The Agatha Christie one is one of my favourites of 21st century DW (though i am a huge Agatha fan).

Tooth and Claw was toss, but not for its historical content. It was toss because it was just "45mins of people being chased around some corridors by a big special effect": one of the worst genres of 21st century DW.

Maybe we could have an Enid Blyton one and settle once and for all the Noddy question

As for the Weimar Republic I was thinking Doctor saves struggling artist with the initials AH - but given his future career, probably not a realistic thought!

How about a Jane Austen period? Sense and Sensorites? Prydonians and Prejudice?

What about Custer's Last Stand?
