"Will They Won't They?" Romance - Love or Hate?

Every year we have to put up with a "Will They Won't They" romance.....these tedious sub-plots obscure other action as the highlights and secondary shows pick up every moment of the non-romance not starting in excruciating minute detail......and apparently "we" love it.

Well I don't.

"Will They Won't They" is a narritive structure.....it's used to pad out soap operas and sappy Sitcoms....it's the moment where Big Brother starts to look threadbare to me because it's an intentional effort to create a story where there usually isn't one. Non-romance affords it's participants valued extra comaera time as we watch them apparently flirt......and of course should any romance be real because apparently "we" think sex is a turn off.....Utter nonsense...the only reasaon sex is a turn off is because the amount of effort to get there has sent everyone to sleep......

I agree! I really am not bothered whether people have sex in the house and the idea that we all want to see it is rubbish! Yes, another Helen and Paul would be good but please dont milk the odd flirting (e.g. Scott + Nush) into a full in-house 'relationship'.

Hate

The contrived false so called pairing off of couples in the BB house, puts me off watching if anything. ( thinks Steph and Cameron ) It's not what I watch BB for. I don't particularly want to see anyone having sex in the house either, but I'm sure it will happen sooner or later in the main BB's. The only one I didn't mind watching unfold was Helen's and Paul's romance as it seemed quite genuine and time has proved it is.

I like will they wont they romances, but only if they for real and not just for the cameras and to get them in the papers. But I definately dont want sex I couldnt watched Jade and PJ, it's all really cringworthy if they go down that route.

BB4 took the "will they won't they romance" to the height of ridiculousness with Cameron + Steph (yeah right, only if she wore a white woolly coat) and Scott + Nush. Totally unbelievable pairings.

They missed out on the real romance between Gozzzz and his duvet cover.

You mean Lee and Sophie aren't genuine?

Agree with you about H + P though.

Not sure about Lee and Sophie, something never quite sat right with that one. I found Lee & Sophie quite nauseating to watch at times, never found that with Paul and Helen.

The thing is...a romance can only be sure real if it ends in a sexual relationship...But apparently most of us don't want them to have sex...So when it comes to "Will They Won't They" it seems most people want the answer to be "Won't"...but they want them to be making some effort towards acheiving the result they don't want....

No romances please well maybe for a day...but then they end up killing each other!!

More fights, arguments, bitching, tactical voting, humour makes me watch BIG BROTHER not someone saying...'I think I love u' 'Actually i dont think i love you' Final day- "I REALLY DO LOVE U!" BORINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

C'mon, it wouldn't be Big Brother without a few on/off relationships
Personally I think half the fun will be debating whether the relationship is genuine or if they are just putting it on for the cameras. I don't see why everyone has an aversion to sex in the BB house all of a sudden - if their relationship reaches that stage then great, I hope I'm not being too naive in thinking there can't be many people who would sleep with someone they didn't actually like that much on national TV just to increase their chance of staying in a house for a few more weeks and add a few extra seconds to their time in the spotlight. Actually on second thoughts...

Will they/won't they relationships are great viewing if Endemol doesn't make them the focus of the entire show (Cameron/Steph and Jade/PJ) but Alex's pounding heart for Adele and his opening up in the dary room that 'everyone who he likes is always out of reach' was great viewing and Alex really endeared to me then. Relationships should just be part of an unfolding story, should never be editted to make it look like they are more of less than they are - and should be natural.

And love them to go at it like rabbits....Sex adds an extra dimension to the tension in the house...paranoia and annoyance will go through the roof....Come on Big Bro...viagra in the water supply...

I love BB romances The only thing that irritates me is when BB tries to make a relationship out of nothing. I like the real ones like Helen & Paul and Lee & Sophie

Depends on the people obviously.

Big Brother would loose viewers if it was just constant arguing because it would be going the extreme other way to what bb4 was like. Will they want they realtionships get people hooked and make they pick up the phone if one of the would be couple get nominated. ( my experience of it all)
Mesostim
23-05-2004
I don't agree Little Bear....I don't think relationships particuarly make people pick up the phone more than anything else....And I think we need some serious arguing going...at least that's real as opposed to fake romances...
little bear

Mesostim i agree that i dont want people faked romances just to stay in the house, i wouldnt believe a romance that happened in the first week because they dont know each other yet. If all bb5 is, is arguing i think that a turn off and people wont picked up the phone because someone argues the most. (i hope)

I'd quite like to see a semi-relationship forming, but as Keanu Reeves in Speed quotes:

"Relationships based on intense experiences, don't often last!"

Final Helen and Paul's has and so has Lee and Sophie's. Does Alex (bb3) and Mel (bb1) count?
Snade

I don't think faked or indeed any romance is a good way of staying in the house. Couples almost always get split up by nominations from their fellow housemates. It happened right back in the first Dutch series I seem to remember, and to Helen & Paul. I guess it is a good way of getting publicity once you leave though, unless you're right finalbroadcast in which case they lose all round. Ho hum.

They dont OFTEN work. I think Helen and Paul, and Lee and Sophie's are the exceptions. For me, BB has evolved now into becoming a game where you have to use people to get on. Nush and Scott were 'good' for each other last year, as it got them noticed (ish). PJ and Jade's exploits got them noticed for a period.

It'll end up being that no relationships will EVER be taken seriously in BB or Reality TV now.

Only if they're genuine are they interesting. Last year, the real romance was Scott and Federico LOL
