Hello!

Can anyone please tell me, is there anywhere on BT 'My Account' web pages that I can find out when my landline contract expires? I have looked and looked but to no avail. The Search facility doesn't tell me.

Does it ever expire? I thought they were doing those 'never ending unless you tell us' contracts now?

I think they are supposed to contact you to advise when it renews and then if you don't tell them you want to cancel, they just renew it!

You may have to call them (good luck) and ask when the renewal date is.

I think you only have a fixed length contract if you are a newish customer (< 18 months) or you have agreed to go onto a renewable 12 month contract to get free evening landline calls.

If it's the latter they send you a letter before the contract is up giving you enough time to cancel before it's renewed. It's not worth canceling it before it expires as the 'penalties' are draconian.

Thanks very much Appleseed and Jepson. I'm not a new customer but I do have the "Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan" and can't remember when it runs out. I'll just have to wait until they want to sell me the next chunk, then. Thanks again.

You could call them and ask, its a free call, if you are getting a £2.99 discount /month then you will be in a rolling 12 month contract which can only be cancelled ( penalty free) on the anniversary of the contract being taken out and although BT are supposed to write to you when this date is coming up, dont bank on it...be aware of the date and if you dont want to auto renew, call them and tell them

These auto renew contracts should be banned.


It should be up to the customer if they want to renew for a further 12 months at a time otherwise after the initial contract of 12 months or 18 months is up it should be just a month's notice.

A month's notice is better for the customer because you don't alway know if you will be at that address for a further 12 months and if it's a rolling 12 month contract you might be a month into it and then have to move abroad and they then want the other 11 months payment.


It's unfortunate nowadays that everything is in favour of the company and nothing is in favour of the customer.

They are always put last.

I can't see anything about a £2.99 discount on my bill or in My Account, so I assume not, although I'm fairly sure I am on a rolling contract which is why I wanted to know how to find out when it is up, or rolls over. I will have to pluck up the courage to call them - a dreary experience at the best of times! Thanks for your help, iniltous.

You may have to look at old bills to see if any credits were applied...in my case one monthly bill was about £14.00 (plus calls) instead of about £11, I called to enquire and was told that they applied 12 credits of £3 over 8 bills, instead of 1 credit per bill, ??? so I had had already had the years discount, I missed a trick here because they said 'would I like to renew for another 12 months for the £2.99 off E&W calls plan, I said ok but I probably could have got a further £36 off for the year £3 off line rental seems to be a standard discount to retain business, so I'll know better next time...another point was I'm on line billing so looked back to see which months I got more that one £2.99 bill credit but only the previous 6 bills can be veiwed, and they all showed one £2.99 credit,so I couldnt verify the months that this multi discount was applied !!....BT apply these things as bill credits rather that showing the line rental or call plan figure as discounted, BT recon they have had awards for their 'plain speaking' billing...thats laughable

Sorry about the long gap, iniltous, but I couldn't find any bills with credits. However ...

BT have now confirmed by letter the date when my contract rolls over - they did this automatically as Jepson said - and so I will be switching to o2 Homephone as soon as that day arrives.
