Got this one on the Trojan rarities box set (great stuff). Luckily the booklet text is online:

The puzzle is - were they The Maytals? Some references claim it - they definitely worked with Desmond Dekker in his early days, and were part of Kong's empire too. This single was released on Leslie Kong's Black Swan label (first incarnation, not the later Island one from the late 70s).However, most of the expert sites seem to shy away from saying definitively they were, and it might be significant that the Trojan notes don't mention it either. They don't often get it wrong.

It's on one of the box extraordinary (and expensive at the time) sets of his complete output. But the link you've given shows an infuriatingly unreadable creidt that isn't Meek. The b side is Frankie Laine's 'Cool Water'. And that's it - no other info anywhere on the song or band.

Sorry to be so pedantic, but weren't they known as Chicago Transit Authority in 1969?

I do rather like their early stuff (1969 and 1970); such a pity they evolved into arguably the most boring band in the history of rock music!

25 OR 6 TO 4 is by far my favourite Chicago track. Unfortunately I cannot submit it to the thread, because it doesn't qualify, being both a big hit and from 1970.

Fortunately, my second favourite track by the band does qualify, as it's nowhere near as well known and from 1969. I have previously submitted this track, some four years ago in the early days of the thread, but the clip I supplied back then is no longer available on Youtube, which is just as well, as I now have an excuse for supplying an alternative clip, which you can find below.

Quite! But I still think that their first two albums are magnificent, especially the first, which gets a regular airing.
I'll always be grateful to the young guy who managed my local record shop. He taught me how to listen to production work by analysing an import copy of the first CTA LP and a couple of other albums over a week during my endless loitering around the shop bunking off school (we were the shop mascots ).
He went on to be a fairly well-known producer a few years later.

Not sure why 'I'd rather go blind' is here - it got to #14 (billed as Chicken Shack with Christine McVie, that was just before she went solo, I think). Every time I hear someone doing 'I'd rather go blind' on tv 'talent shows', it's always Christine Perfect's plaintive voice I hear, even though Etta James' version is one of the greatest songs ever.
'Tears in the wind' also scraped into the Top 30, although without looking it up I don't know if that's one of those NME chart anomalies.

Yes, id rather go blind did get to #14 but doesnt feature on compilation albums and i regard it as rare enough to be included. Remember the #20 rule isnt strict but a guide. Its well known i suppose by us oldies but not with the young. Anyway ithought it deserved a mention.

"He's So Fine" actually got to no. 16 in the British charts. It was "One Fine Day", which is a far superior track (imo) and which is not mentioned in your selection, that only got as high as no. 29.

However, I've noticed that the Youtube link for "He's So Fine" actually links to "One Fine Day", so problem resolved in a roundabout, if somewhat confusing, sort of way!
