There are some quite rare ones among all the big hits on this compilation album, and that's pretty unusual for this type of sixties compilation album.

Thane Russell and Three? Mike Rabin and the Demons? The Brand? Justine Washington? The Gary Edwards Combo? Elizabeth Cotten and Brenda Evans? Earl Van Dyke and The Soul Brothers? Never heard of any of these acts!

I'm a fan of Marc Bolan, but I don't know the track by him on this album. I'm also a fan of Helen Shapiro (I think she's a much better singer than Lulu), but, again, I don't know the track by her on this album.

Also, most sixties albums that include "Twist And Shout" either have the very well known version by the Beatles or the quite well know version by the Isley Brothers. It's interesting that this album includes the little known (and pretty awful imo) original version by the Top Notes.

Can't find much - it's a Sammy Kahn ballad and Doris Day recorded it. Produced by Bert Berns. Reminds me of 'I only have eyes for you' - the 'shoo-ba-ba-dubs' on this track are exactly how Rotary Connection do it on their version of 'I only have eyes' a few years later.

Don't recall the programme or the theme. Johnny Clarke's obviously been about a bit, there's a fair few light jazz people he's played with at various times, and he worked with Johnny Pearson. Done a few tv themed songs. George Cole (Minder) chose this track as one of his Desert Island discs - if anyone can find the programme that might say a bit more.

i must say i prefer pets mid 60's material to her early stuff. probably start posting on mondays again now work is subsiding.

She actually had two parallel careers, because during the early 60s she was also having a completely different set of hits in France, recorded in France with French musicians (ie, not just translations of her British hits, as most girl singers did).

I vaguely remember seeing both those Vogues tracks when I first started viewing this thread about four years ago, so that'll be nine years between their first appearance and their future featured appearance! Did you think the thread would go on for that long when you started it?
