Vabosity's Fifth Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #22.
Four tracks originally submitted to the thread on pages 85 to 88 respectively. Grapefruit - Dear Delilah (1968) Genre: Psychedelic Pop Original thread page: 85 Date originally submitted: 13th October 2013 Original poster: Multimedia81 Comments: A very good track by Grapefruit, whose singer was a certain Alexander Young, elder brother of George Young of the Easybeats (my favourite ever Aussie band) and of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC (everybody else’s favourite Aussie band). Now, not a lot of people know that. ![]() 49th Parallel - Twilight Woman (1969) Genre: Pop Rock Original thread page: 86 Date originally submitted: 24th October 2013 Original poster: Barney06 Comments: This is an excellent track by 49th Parallel, a Canadian band who named themselves after the line of latitude along which much of the border between the USA and Canada is situated. Twilight Woman was the band’s biggest hit in their native Canada, and sold moderately well south of the 49th Parallel too. Suffice to say, both the band and the track failed to make any impact on this side of the Atlantic. The Artwoods - I Take What I Want (1966) Genre: British Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Original thread page: 87 Date originally submitted: 1st November 2013 Original poster: mushymanrob Comments: A very good track by the Artwoods, whose singer was a certain Arthur Wood, elder brother of Ronnie Wood of the Faces and the Rolling Stones. Now, not a lot of people know that. ![]() Bob Azzam - Mustapha (1960) Genre: Pop Original thread page: 88 Date originally submitted: 6th November 2013 Original poster: mushymanrob Comments: This one’s a real oddity. Bob Azzam was an Egyptian singer of Lebanese ancestry and the song has a distinctive Eastern Mediterranean feel to it. It seems like an unlikely track to have been a hit single in the UK, but it was, peaking at #23 in the summer of 1960. |

Vabosity's Fifth Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #23.
Four tracks originally submitted to the thread on pages 89 to 92 respectively. Lavern Baker (and Jimmy Ricks) - You’re The Boss (1961) Genre: Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Original thread page: 89 Date originally submitted: 8th November 2013 Original poster: mushymanrob Comments: Two tracks by the fabulous Lavern Baker have thus far featured in Vabosity’s Fifth Anniversary Review, and I see absolutely no reason why there shouldn’t be a third, especially when that third track is as good as this. Ron Goodwin - The Girl From Corsica (1960) Genre: Easy Listening Orchestral Music Original thread page: 90 Date originally submitted: 18th November 2013 Original poster: JohnnyForget Comments: I absolutely love this track. What a beautiful piece of music this is! The Beat Merchants - Pretty Face (1964) Genre: British Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Original thread page: 91 Date originally submitted: 2nd December 2013 Original poster: mushymanrob Comments: Good mid-sixties British R’n’B with lots and lots and lots of harmonica - wonderful stuff! Esther and Abi Ofarim - Freight Train (1963) Genre: Folk Original thread page: 92 Date originally submitted: 11th December 2013 Original poster: Barney06 Comments: Esther and Abi Ofarim are mainly known in the UK for their 1968 chart topping novelty song, Cinderella Rockefella, which means that they are widely regarded on these shores as a novelty act. This is a real shame, because the Israeli duo were most certainly not a novelty act. In fact, they were actually quite a talented twosome, especially Esther, who had (and presumably still has) a very good voice indeed, as this fine track clearly demonstrates. |

(like a baby) He was one of the first British teen pop idols (he arrived on the pop scene after Tommy Steele, but preceded Cliff Richard and Marty Wilde), and made headlines by constantly getting drunk and into fights, so he can claim to be the first British pop star with a bad boy reputation. He was called up for National Service, but was given a hard time by his fellow recruits and couldn't hack it, so was demobbed after only a few weeks for the sake of his psychological health. Only doing a few weeks of National Service instead of the full two years did not impress the tabloid press who went out of their way to destroy his career, and pretty soon that career was effectively over, so as I have already mentioned, I'm surprised to see him still recording in the sixties. |

Vabosity's Fifth Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #24.
Four tracks originally submitted to the thread on pages 93 to 96 respectively. The Scott Bedford Four - How Does It Feel (1965) Genre: Pop Rock Original thread page: 93 Date originally submitted: 6th January 2014 Original poster: Randy Gibbons Comments: This is a very nice track from the Scott Bedford Four, an obscure American band who remind me a little of the Searchers, while their singer (Scott Bedford, presumably) reminds me a little of Gene Pitney, a combination that gives them a rather interesting sound. Frida Boccara - Through The Eyes Of A Child (1969) Genre: Eurovision Pop Original thread page: 94 Date originally submitted: 29th January 2014 Original poster: mushymanrob Comments: The result of the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest was perhaps the most farcical in the entire history of the event. The entries from four nations (France, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK) all tied for first place, and as no tie-break mechanism existed at the time, all four were declared as co-winners. The French entry was a song entitled Un Jour Un Enfant sung by Frida Boccara, and Through The Eyes Of A Child is the English language version of that song. Of the four songs that won in 1969, Frida Boccara’s beautiful ballad is unquestionably my favourite. The fact that it didn’t win the Contest outright, but had to share the honours with three other (imho inferior) songs does rather annoy me, and the fact that one of those other three songs was Boom Bang A Bang by Lulu just adds insult to injury. Jacqueline Boyer - Tom Pillibi (1960) Genre: Eurovision Pop Original thread page: 95 Date originally submitted: 18th February 2014 Original poster: mushymanrob Comments: We’ve just had an English language version of the French song that was a co-winner of the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest, so how about a French language version of the French song that was the outright winner nine years earlier? France won the 1960 Eurovision Song Contest with this very, very quaint song, but as Gallic quaintness does rather appeal to me, how can Tom Pillibi by Jacqueline Boyer be anything but a real guilty pleasure? Solomon Burke - Keep A Light In The Window Till I Come Home (1967) Genre: Soul Original thread page: 96 Date originally submitted: 6th March 2014 Original poster: JohnnyForget Comments: Sol certainly had soul. Marvellous track! |

Vabosity's Fifth Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #25.
Four tracks originally submitted to the thread on pages 97 to 100 respectively. Dusty Springfield - I Think It's Going To Rain Today (1968) Genre: Pop Original thread page: 97 Date originally submitted: 25th March 2014 Original poster: JohnnyForget Comments: The magnificent Dusty Springfield with a flawless interpretation of a great Randy Newman song. Eric Burdon and the Animals - Mama Told Me Not To Come (1966) Genre: Rock Original thread page: 98 Date originally submitted: 15th April 2014 Original poster: mushymanrob Comments: Let’s follow one great Randy Newman composition with another. While I do actually prefer the 1970 hit version by Three Dog Night, I can’t deny that the Eric Burdon version from four years earlier is pretty darn good. Anthony Newley - Sweet Love Child (1969) Genre: Pop Original thread page: 99 Date originally submitted: 15th May 2014 Original poster: Vabosity Comments: David Bowie and Anthony Newley are two very different types of singer, and yet the former often cites the latter as a major influence. Just like Bowie I too am a great admirer of Anthony Newley, an actor turned singer and songwriter who had a string of hits in the late fifties and early sixties with a mix of novelty ditties and conventional pop songs, but all sung in his very own unique and unconventional way. Sweet Love Child, which was recorded a good few years after Newley’s chart heyday, is a rather twee song, so it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it a great deal. The song was specifically written for inclusion in a long forgotten 1969 film directed by and starring Newley, the very bizarre and somewhat pretentious, but wonderfully titled Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness? Aretha Franklin - Evil Gal Blues (1964) Genre: Soulful Jazzy Blues Original thread page: 100 Date originally submitted: 19th May 2014 Original poster: Barney06 Comments: This is the 100th and final track to be repeated in Vabosity’s Fifth Anniversary Review, and what better way to finish than with the fabulous Aretha Franklin. Vabosity's Fifth Anniversary Review has now been completed. I did what I said I'd do at the start of the Review. I have repeated one track from each of the first 100 pages of the thread. All repeated tracks are ones that I like a great deal and none of them have previously been repeated in either my First or my Third Anniversary Reviews. It was good to be posting to this thread again after quite a long absence. I'm going to take a bit of a break now, but I will resume posting at some point in the future, although I don't know exactly when. In the meantime, keep listening to all the good tracks that Rob is submitting every day. |

I have heard "Mexicali Rose" and "Never Goodbye" once or twice on oldies radio, but certainly not "Marcheta" nor "A Little Love A Little Kiss". The only Karl Denver track that gets played on oldies radio on a regular basis (and these days it's more semi-regular than regular) is "Wimoweh".
Also, "Wimoweh" is the only Karl Denver track that is likely to appear on a sixties compilation album. Oh, by the way, you've supplied the wrong link for "Marcheta". Here's the right one:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjJ2g3IVbUE |

ok.... a change.... personally im fed up of playing hundreds of ska tracks, theres been so many and its looking like nothing much is going to change.
so ill not be posting a vid to every track listed when , like today, theres a long list of them. ill post 6 with vids and simply list the rest - its then up to you if you like them to listen in for yourself or indeed are free to post them up here, no probs, but i cannot be doing with going through every track listed.
