Shape & Sizes - Rain On My Face (Decca)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JqKrJcrPho

Obscure, but delicious B Side from their only Decca 45 - from 1966. Female fronted act who I think were based in London.

...and a few more soul goodies:

Soul Brothers Six - Some Kind Of Wonderful (1967)

The Astors - Candy (1965)

Archie Bell & The Drells - Showdown (1968)

One of the great things about the internet is that you can find all kinds of interesting and obscure material that never had a UK release (or sank without a trace if it did!)

This is very rare english language recording by german singer Alexandra. She was killed in a car crash near Hamburg in 1969 and became a cult figure in her own country. The car crash was never fully explained.

Alexandra - "Golden Earrings" (Philips - 1969)

This slice of oriental sunshine pop from 1969 would not have either but it's a nice blend of traditional and psych.

Edit - just noticed you got it yourself!

lol Edit 2 - I reckon your second song must be the 'b' side 'Keep In Touch'.”

Yep, it's the B side. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for that one, Mike. I'm really surprised by how much I liked it.

From a German singer who's no longer with us to an Italian-American singer who's also no longer with us. Bobby Darin's biggest hits may have been in the fifties, but he continued to make great records in a variety of styles well into the sixties. Here are some of my favourites:-

Bobby Darin - Beyond The Sea (1960)

Bobby Darin - Nature Boy (1961)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGBU7RB4kRw

Bobby Darin - Things (1962)

Bobby Darin - If I Were A Carpenter (1966)

Nature Boy was only a minor hit, but the other three were all big hits. Beyond the Sea reached No. 8 in 1960 and is still played a lot today. Things got to No. 2 in 1969 and If I Were A Carpenter reached No. 9 in 1966.

Glad you like it, one of Alexandra's songs was later given english lyrics and recorded by Shirley Bassey - although that had to wait until 1976....

Sorry, I made a mistake here. Things was a hit in 1962, not 1969.

Three of them were indeed Top Ten hits, but how often do you hear them played today? The only Bobby Darin songs that ever get heard now are "Dream Lover" and "Mack the Knife", his two chart-topping singles from the fifties. The only version of "Beyond The Sea" that ever gets played today tends to be the Robbie Williams one and the only version of "If I Were A Carpenter" that ever gets played today tends to be the one by the Four Tops. As for "Things", it may have been Bobby Darin's biggest UK hit of the sixties, but I feel it's been well and truly forgotten.

Generally, the OP's rule about non-hits and minor hits being suitable for the thread and Top Twenty hits being unsuitable is a good one, but there are definite exceptions to that rule. For example, "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison failed to chart, but I would still consider it to be too well known for this thread, while quite a few big hits such as the Darin ones and some others are for various reasons not very well known today, so I think they're fine for inclusion in the thread.

I've always used Rob's Top Twenty rule as a guide rather than a hard and fast rule. Some extremely famous sixties songs did not fare at all well on the UK charts, whereas quite a few very big hits appear to been consigned to oblivion.

I also like this song, although I have to say that I prefer the version by ... would you believe? ... Bobby Darin.

Yes, I can see what you mean.

I agree that Things never seems to get played and yet it was such a big hit. I must be unusual in that I know all the words of it even now.

It is quite difficult to know what to include in this thread as I thought it had to be good records that didn't make the charts, but maybe not.

"Things" is a terrific song. I think Bobby Darin penned it himself. Great lyrics too.

As far as knowing what to include on this thread - you can't really go wrong with "the more obscure the better", but if there is a track you really like that was a big hit that you believe doesn't get a lot of plays today then why not include it? The OP does object to some tracks being included in the thread, but they tend to be the very obvious very well known songs, e.g "She Loves You" by the Beatles or "Satisfaction" by the Stones. He didn't object to "If I Were A Carpenter" by Bobby Darin, which as you rightly pointed out was a Top Ten hit, he actually posted to say how much he liked it.

Other than "Space Oddity" that's got to be the best thing he recorded in the sixties. Terrific track!

I've avidly been watching "The Kennedys" on BBC-2 over the last few Fridays. Two great episodes last night, the second of which included the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas in 1963.

Here's a fascinating song detailing the extraordinary coincidences between the aforementioned assassination of JFK and that of President Abraham Lincoln almost a hundred years earlier:-

Buddy Starcher - History Repeats Itself (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO-WJrCH-mg

And when it comes to songs about Lincoln and Kennedy I can't really leave out this classic:-

Dion - Abraham, Martin And John (1968)
