There's been a lot in the media recently about Charles Dickens, who was 200 years old last Tuesday. However, I am somewhat baffled as to why there's been no mention of this celebrated man's most remarkable achievement, i.e. recording this great track at the grand old age of 153.

I've got that single; flip it over and you get a very groovy 'b' side. Those Victorians had some great tunes!

On yesterday's Pick of the Pops Tony played St Louis Union's version of the Beatles' Girl. I do not recall hearing it before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQpZCOQ3f5U

Coincidentally, that chart of 1966 featured the Overlanders' version of Michelle, another Beatles' song not released as a single.

Petula Clark recorded a version of Rain, another Beatles' album track not released as a single. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHNyeQcNrq4

The St. Louis Union version was a hit in 1966.

This reached No. 5 in October 1963 and was in the charts for 17 weeks. I hated it, it always sounded so dreary and seemed to get played so much.

the shadows 'geronimo'

This reached Number 11 in December 1963. I remember going out to buy it with my saved up pocket money.

Agreed a really good track. Sadly it only reached number 26 in the charts. All the girls loved Heinz with his white blond hair. It was such a let-down to find out years later that it was only dyed!

In 1967 Manfred Mann had a bit UK hit single with a very catchy pop song called Ha! Ha! Said The Clown. I recently discovered, very much to my surprise, that there was also a version by the Yardbirds, which was a minor hit in the USA.

I prefer the Manfred Mann version, but the one by the Yardbirds is still pretty good, so here it is.

This is the first time I've heard that version. Good track.

How about two other great versions (one vocal, one instrumental) of this fabulous melody?

The Beatles - A Taste Of Honey (1963)
Can any Beatles track ever be considered rare? Probably not, but some are certainly not as well known as others, and some of those not so famous Beatles tracks have appeared on this thread without the OP objecting, so unless Rob is in a particularly foul mood (please don't mention Michael Jackson!) I can't see him taking me to task about submitting the Beatles' excellent version of A Taste Of Honey.

Acker Bilk - A Taste of Honey (1963)
I wasn't aware that Acker Bilk had recorded this tune until very recently. Absolutely love this version.

Back in the early days of the thread (would you believe that's almost two years ago? ) there were quite a few tracks that I wanted to submit, but didn't, because I couldn't find them on Youtube. I'm delighted to say that I recently discovered that three of those tracks are now available on Youtube, so without much further ado, here they are.

Shelby Flint - Cast Your Fate To The Wind (1966)
Sounds Orchestral had a massive hit single with an excellent instrumental version, but here's a vocal version that I love almost as much.

The Eyes - I'm Rowed Out (1966)
Fantastic track. The Eyes definitely sound like they were heavily influenced by The Who, or perhaps it was the other way round!

Sweetwater - In A Rainbow (1968)
Sweetwater have the rare distinction of being the first band to play at one of the most famous musical events of the decade, the 1969 Woodstock Festival. This rare distinction does not appear to have rescued them from obscurity, but they were a fine band and this is a fine track.

This is the seventh post to the thread in less than 24 hours. We haven't had that frequency of posts since the early days of the thread!

Sweetwater may have been the first band to play at Woodstock, but they were not the first act to play there. That honour fell to Richie Havens. Here's a couple of songs he performed at the festival.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Herman!

Here are a couple I like:

Herman's Hermits - Listen People (1965)
This was the UK flip of 'You Won't Be Leaving' and was written by Graham Gouldman.

Heman's Hermits - Little Boy Sad (1966)
Great cover of an earlier Johnny Burnette hit.

While I'm at it - here's a pretty tough sounding cover of Jezebel, originally by Marty Wilde I think.

Herman's Hermits - Jezebel (1967)”

Original was by Frankie Laine in the early fifties.

Marty Wilde's cover was a minor hit in 1962 and I distinctly remember submitting it to the thread even though that would have been more than a year ago.

Like Rob, I'm not that keen on Herman's Hermits, but having just now heard their version of Jezebel for the very first time I have to say that I'm both surprised and impressed.
