I rather like it. The French were never very good at rock'n'roll, but they've always done Jazz rather well. |

Two of the members of Les Double Six were also part of the more well known French jazz group, The Swingle Singers who were most famous for their intepretations of Bach although I've always preferred Jacques Loussier's Play Bach myself.

Duke of Earl by Gene Chandler
I love Doo-wop music, and although it’s usually associated with the 1950’s, a lot of great tracks were still being recorded in the early-sixties. This is the 1962 original version of a song that was a big hit for the Darts in the late-seventies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9PoU...eature=related Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? by Chicago Transit Authority Recorded in 1969 before the band dropped the Transit Authority from its name and became plain old Chicago. The piano intro to this track is a little overlong, but once the song actually kicks off the wait will have been worth it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcHlH...eature=related Ruby Baby by Dion Being a big fan of Doo-wop I’m naturally a big fan of Dion (with or without the Belmonts). I love “Runaround Sue” and “The Wanderer”, but both were big UK hits and not really obscure enough for this thread, so I’ve gone with this other gem from 1962. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wthq9...eature=related Abraham, Martin and John by Dion By the late-sixties Doowop was very much out of vogue, so Dion tried his hand at Folk Rock. This is his 1968 tribute to assassination victims Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and the Kennedy brothers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYX0l...eature=related |

Eva Cassidy died in 1996 aged 33, which means she was born in 1963, so I somehow don't think she recorded the original version of Wade In The Water.
. ![]() Blind Boys of Alabama do a great version of that track |

Kenny Everett tried his luck as a recording artist in 1968
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTq1XjOoYpU as did Tony Blackburn in 1969 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpubz...next=1&index=8 A song that failed to chart Peter Sarstedt - "I am a cathedral" (United Artists 1969) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7JPbv4rHlI And who were "The Orchids"? (Decca 1963). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bZrqANPnwk Finally The Pentangle - "Once I had a Sweetheart". (Transatlantic 1969). This only reached number 46. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfxcpXRWZQk |

Here's Neil MacArthur aka Colin Blunstone lead singer of The Zombies with his own cover of their greatest hit, She's Not There
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FRgB7PkCLM And two more covers by Graeme Allwright, a singer from New Zealand who came to Paris in 1948, not speaking a word of French., from his much underrated '68 album Le jour de clarté Jusqu'à la ceinture (Pete Seeger - Waist Deep in the Big Muddy) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWP4rLMecxg Graeme Allwright - Suzanne (Leonard Cohen) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnCRH7o0RZw |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfxcpXRWZQk Reminds me of another beautiful song "Earth Song" by Mary Hopkin -stunning record, and although almost 40 years old still sounding very fresh. |

The next four were minor, hits but well remembered
Timebox - "Beggin" (Deram 1968) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54On0uLtdJc The Flirtations - "Nothing But A Heartache" (Deram 1968) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_aaA-SeSlQ Gloria Jones- "Tainted Love" (1964) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSehtaY6k1U Max Romeo - "Wet Dream" (Trojan 1969) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C79spWeuakU According to my book this reached number 44 and I assume it was banned off the radio! Finally, one I have on a "Disky" compilation CD from Holland and apparently recorded in 1969 Byron Lee & Mighty Sparrow - "Only a fool" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQkcooGz3BE |
