Here's a list - the Cougars were banned! Shame, it's a great record.

I can't believe some of the entries on that list:-

"Mack The Knife" by Bobby Darin

"Johnny Remember Me" by John Leyton

"Ebony Eyes" by the Everly Brothers

"I Am the Walrus" by the Beatles

"Lola" by the Kinks

"Sailing" by Rod Stewart

I had no idea they were banned by the BBC. All massive hits, so it looks like even back then you really didn't need Auntie to sell your music to the masses.

i can understand the others, (drugs/murder/death/sex references) but why was Sailing banned?

It looks like it was banned during the Falklands war for some reason,

Unfortunately, I couldn’t include the brilliant “Light My Fire” as that track is far too well known for this thread. A pity really, because it’s one of my Top Ten favourite tracks of all time (i.e. the long album version is, I’m not so keen on the abridged single version).

Many people who share my enthusiasm for the Doors’ version of “Light My Fire” tend to loathe the more MOR cover versions by Jose Feliciano and Will Young. Not me. I actually like those versions. I also like the cover by Shirley Bassey. I think the song lends itself well to interpretation in styles other than Rock. Well most other styles, anyway, I absolutely detest the hit seventies Disco version by Amii Stewart, but then I absolutely detest all seventies Disco, so no surprise there.”

Whilst not a rare song the original mono 45 edit is pretty much forgotten - quite a bit of additional compression too. I love it.

hi guys...im still here after another enforced break which i extended ... man there are some touchy guys in this place, apparently you have to respect someone who swears black is white, and if you dont they can get you for either 'disrespect' or 'winding them up'.... jeez...i wish this site was run by ex rockers/punks/skins... at least we wouldnt have to leave bullshit unchallenged!

i have yet again requested a pinned retro forum, but i guess dispite decent threads like this, and the intelligent contributions made by adults here the bosses would sooner kids talk about cheryl cole, rihanna, madonna or kylie then utilise the potential there is here to create the nets best retro forum.

tbh i think we ought to keep a look out for a better site, why should music forums cater for kids only?

thanks for keeping the thread running, its still very interesting to hear/read contributions

How about a Facebook Retro Music group?

I'd be in, as this and the 60s Classics and Rare 70s threads are the only reason I keep coming here. Frankly the rest of the music forum makes me want to slash my wrists.

Any other votes?

it would only work if the main contributers are on facebook.. but i believe there is a demand for 60's and 70's music and not just the top 20 stuff.

A new one on me, but after just one listen it's already my favourite cover version of the song.

Three very different versions of the same song.

Anita Carter - Ring Of Fire (1962)
This song was written by Merle Kilgore and June Carter, and this is the original version, sung by Anita Carter, sister of the aforementioned June Carter.

Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire (1963)
This is the definitive version of the song, sung by the legendary Johnny Cash, husband of the aforementioned June Carter.

Eric Burdon and the Animals - Ring of Fire (1968)
Of the three versions in my post this was the only one that was a hit in the UK, albeit a minor one.

Just a bit of a housekeeping post this week from me - no theme or common thread, just three good tracks I found and wanted to share.

The Coasters - Run Red Run (1959)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdVMQbZwP-0

Nancy Sinatra - In Our Time (1966)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8de_rtc8gbw

Kay Martin & Her Bodyguards - Swamp Girl (1959)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e8bY2DsOe0

I think I might have to have an in-depth investigation of Kay Martin!

Coming soon though, when I can get round to it we'll have a look at The Left Banke.

This thread is nearly two years old, and yet it only contains one track by Leonard Cohen!

Time for a few more, perhaps?

Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (1967)

Leonard Cohen - So Long, Marianne (1967)

Leonard Cohen - Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye (1967)

Leonard Cohen - Story Of Isaac (1969)

Best known for their #5 US hit Walk Away Renee (which I haven't included here), The Left Banke were a classical-influenced psych-pop outfit from New York City which ran mainly from 1965-69 with several spilts and reformations along the way. Their main songwriter was Michael Brown, who was just 16 years old when he wrote Walk Away Renee about Renée Fladen-Kamm, then-girlfriend of The Left Banke's bassist Tom Finn.

They recorded two albums in the 60s - 'Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina' and 'The Left Banke Too' which are well worth a purchase, and one much later which I haven't investigated.

The Left Banke - Pretty Ballerina (1966)

Reached #15 on the Billboard chart, so really this qualifies as a hit, but when did you last hear it on the radio?

This has to be the oddest one to be banned by the BBC, a record made by the BBC!

I love the Young Rascals, they were a fabulous band, and Rob's post clearly demonstrates that there was a lot more to them than just Groovin' (their only ever UK hit single). A good number of excellent tracks by the Young Rascals have featured on this thread over the last two years, and I heartily recommend that you use the Search facility to locate those tracks. Then have a good listen. You certainly won't be disappointed.

I was previously unaware that the Young Rascals had done Since I Fell For You. Good version. This song, which is a particular favourite of mine, dates back to the forties and there have been several fine cover versions over the years.

Here are two sixties covers of that song, each quite different from the other, but both utterly superb.

Lenny Welch - Since I Fell For You (1963)

The Sonics - Since I Fell For You (1966)
