I like all the tracks in Randy's post, but Walk Away Renee (mentioned, but not featured) is by far my favourite track by this band. I really find it hard to believe that Michael Brown was only 16 years old when he wrote this beautiful song.

Most British people who know this song at all only know the UK hit cover by the Four Tops. That version's good, but the original version is absolutely exquisite. In fact, I like the latter so much that it took pride of place in the first post I ever made to this thread ...

Bernard Cribbins - My Resistance Is Low (1962)
That great British comedy actor, Bernard Cribbins, had two UK Top Ten hit singles in 1962 with the novelty songs Hole In The Ground and Right Said Fred. In the same year he recorded an album which included this fine rendition of a great old Hoagy Carmichael song.

Richard Chamberlain - They Long To Be Close To You (1963)
The Carpenters may have recorded the definitive and most successful version of this Bacharach and David song, but they were not the first act to record it. That honour goes to one of the most popular actors of the era, Richard Chamberlain. Actually, his voice is surprisingly good and this version of the song is not bad at all.

Chris Sandford - Not Too Little Not Too Much (1963)
This track is very much of its day, but it's decent enough. The actor Chris Sandford was appearing in Coronation Street (as popular then as it is now) when he recorded the track, which was probably the main reason it became a UK hit single, albeit a minor one.

Phil Kinorra (also known by his stage names Julian Covey, Julien Covey and Philamore Lincoln) is a British drummer and singer who performed with Brian Auger and the Trinity, Graham Bond and Don Rendell, as well as with his own band, Julian Covey & The Machine, for which he sang and played drums. He also played as a replacement drummer for The Who's Keith Moon after he hurt himself in 1967. However, he only played one concert with the band before being replaced by Chris Townson, who continued filling in for Moon for four more concerts.

Take all the dates with a pinch of salt; information on this is a bit scant. The album The North Wind Blew South was released in 1970, but I've included it in this thread rather than Rare 70s because it was recorded in '69 and to keep it together with the Julian Covey tracks.

How about Mike Berry, known later to TV audiences as Mr Spooner from Are You Being Served. As a singer he was best known for his kitsch minor hit Tribute to Buddy Holly (latterly Sunshine of your Smile) as well as his many Holly covers; here's a rare original song

A post celebrating the other half of the great songwriting duo, Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman. Together they wrote some of the sixties most enduring songs such as Teenager in Love and Save the last dance for me but Mort Shuman in particular had a remarkable career trajectory that took him from songwriter in Greenwich Village to French music star before finally ending his days writing songs for West End musicals. more about him here

Many of the hits Mort and Doc wrote were also recorded by Mort, an accomplished blues singer. Here is I'm a Man , a Rockabilly number that would become a hit for Fabian.

I like Mort Shuman. He and Doc Pomus wrote some of the best rock 'n' roll/pop songs of the late fifties and early sixties. I also really like his English translations of Jacques Brel songs, which are not "sanitised" like those by Rod McKuen.

Incidentally, the Monday Monday in your post is a jazz instrumental cover of the classic song written by John Phillips and originally recorded by the Mamas and the Papas. It is not a Mort Shuman composition.

Ah, okay. I must admit I'd only really heard of him for his 70's hit le lac majeur. Songwriters unfairly get less of the limelight.
