I hope this thread isn't dead... I'll give it another try...

The Barbarians - Hey Little Bird (1964) - A punk band from my birth state of Massachusetts. They had a minor hit with "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?", but I like this track better. Here's a live performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOWC7lhuKtQ

Spencer Davis - When I Come Home (1966) - A great track sung by Steve Winwood with Spencer Davis Group, performed live in 1967:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jhf9yTXh8dc

Hollies - Don't You Even Care (What Happens To Me)? (1966) - A great album track that was not a hit, but had that lovely jangly guitar + vocal harmony sound of the Hollies.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O71-_s6RFBg

Dearly Beloved - Flight 13 (1967) - A popular band in Tucson, AZ in the mid-60s, the Dearly Beloved released four 45s in 1966-67. This was the "B" side of their last record, a smokin' garage-psych number:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clRaXCKvb_8

The Choir - It's Cold Outside (1967) - A mod-pop band from Cleveland, OH. This was their first (of 5) 45s, a melodic, Merseybeat-influenced pop song:

I read this thread every time there's a new post but I haven't contributed much

I suppose it's due to being a mid-teen during the late 60s and being into the Top twenty and Motown and Soul...........not really 'rare' stuff but all pretty well known stuff !

I don't know any rare 60s tracks !...................I was a teeny bopper !................

I wasn't aware that you didn't contribute much to this thread. I'm sure I've seen your user name many times, although I could be confusing this thread with the Sixties Appreciation thread.

A lot of sixties music that was unsuccessful in its day has been very influential on the music of later decades, e.g. the albums recorded by American bands like Velvet Underground and Love. This prompts a few younger people to go out of their way to discover a decade that was before their time. Chart position is irrelevant to them - they go for the sixties music that floats their boat, and much of it is rare.

So, ironically, anyone who was a teenager in the sixties, may actually be at a disadvantage when it comes to contributing to this thread.

More of my favorite obscure 60s favorites:

Mel Torme - I'm Comin' Home (1962) - Here's a live performance of Mel singing this jazzy number on the Judy Garland show and it's a hoot! (This track actually made it to #36 on the pop charts, so I'm not sure if it truly qualifies as "rare", but what the heck.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut1xwRErqlM

The Byrds - You Showed Me (1964) - A pretty early Byrds tune, later covered by the Turtles.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8boBmur2tW0

The Byrds - It's No Use (1965) - Another great Byrds number, this one a rocker from their 1965 "Mr. Tambourine" LP.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTgp9hXqjOE

The Who - La-La-La-Lies (1965) - A great Who number that didn't chart. This YouTube video has some nice early live clips of the Who.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8GcFuMJ53U

The Music Machine - Talk Me Down (1967) - A haunting minor-key number with the characteristic stop/start beat by the Machine Machine (who earlier had a big hit with "Talk Talk".)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RwgRd_eby0

Enjoy!

No, it wasn't Georgie Fame who had a British hit with that Mel Torme track, it was - would you believe? - Mel Torme!

IFeelFree is American, so is presumably quoting its American chart position in her post. It made the British top twenty, so would appear to have been a much bigger hit over here than it was over there. Of course, IFeelFree is not to know that, and it's a fantastic track, so I'm glad it's on the thread!

D'oh !.........

I just don't associate Mel Torme with having hits..........

If you go to www.everyhit.com you'll find he had two hits in this country, "Mountain Greenery" in 1956 and "Comin' Home Baby" in 1963.

Well, I often use it, mainly for quoting chart facts on the Sixties Appreciation Thread, and I'm sure some of the other posters do too. You don't think we have all that info in our heads, do you?

Has anyone mentioned Van Dyke Parks in here!? Amazing. His album "Song Cycle" is incredible and has been my #1 for the last two weeks and spends it's 5th week in my Top 10 at present. The Moody Blues are also among my faves from this era, "In Search of The Lost Chord" is nothing short of amazing.

More good, but obscure, 60s tracks:

Betty Everett - I Can't Hear You (1964) - This soul/R&B number only made it to #66 in the charts, but it's terrific!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Uch7gJjKe8

The Byrds - It Won't Be Wrong (1965) - This great tune only made it to #63 on the Billboard Hot 100s, so it's "slightly" rare. More of the same jangly guitars and lovely vocal harmonies characteristic of the Byrds sound. Here they are on TV:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv6K8JaPwWs

The Rolling Stones - Mercy, Mercy (1965) - This wasn't a hit for the Stones, as far as I know, but a great R&B tune nevertheless! Here's a live performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V2ESk8ASeM

The Wailers - I Don't Want to Follow You (1967) - Solid garage sound delivered with attitude by the Wailers (aka the Fabulous Wailers), from Tacoma Washington:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S0Du4pO5bc

Odyssey - Little Boy, Little Girl (1968) - A driving pop-psych-punk belter by an obscure band from Los Angeles who only recorded a single 45. Is that obscure enough? LOL! (And, no, this is not the Turtles under a pseudonym!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scCVuKQDEbE

My apologies if any of these songs have been posted before. I haven't had time to go through the entire thread.

The Beach Boys Be True to Your School, 1963, top ten in America, never released here. A classic tale of a high school athlete and his g/f who is a cheerleader.

As the thread has 1616 posts that's quite understandable!

Quite amusing.”

After discovering the above gem about two weeks ago I decided to further investigate the songs of Allan Sherman, and I quite like what I found, so a couple more tracks from him.

Allan Sherman - The Mexican Hat Dance (1963)

Allan Sherman - Shticks Of One And A Half A Dozen Of The Other (1963)

Good track. It does sound a bit like the Turtles who were also on White Whale.

I quite like this one from a link on the Odyssey tack:
The Light - Back Up Girl (1967)

Here's a great pop gem by the aforementioned Turtles:
The Turtles - Too Young To Be One (1967)

Here's a fun pop/garage number by a band from LA:
The New Breed - Want Ad Reader (1966)

More Want Ads by these early 70s pop/soulsters:
The Honey Cone - Want Ads (1970)

I think I mentioned one of his tunes years ago but there wasn't a Youtube link at the time - there is now!

Harper's Bizarre - High Coin (1967)

Van Dyke Parks also wrote this one:
Harper's Bizarre - Come To The Sunshine (1967)

A post to let sixties music fans know that the "non-rare" equivalent of this thread, "The Sixties Music Appreciation Thread" has been moved from the main forum to the Music Appreciation sub-forum.

So if you want to post to or view that thread that's where you need to go from now on.

I like the tracks, and this one made me laugh -- I haven't heard this song in, like, 40 years. I remember it though!

More 60s:

The Byrds - I See You (1966) - A great pop-psych number from their "Fifth Dimension" album!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SufyqHu6KdA

The Who - Glow Girl (1966) - A lovely mod rocker by the Who, though it was never a hit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YTajgFuMVQ

The Paragons - Abba (1967) - A catchy pop tune by a totally unknown band from North Carolina who only released a single 45, this being the "A" side. This is a live performance, and these kids look like they're about 15, LOL!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDxjm8BkGBU

Chocolate Watchband - Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love-In) (1967) - A smokin' psych-punk track by a great band from San Jose, California, who unfortunately never had a hit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llF_gQgXGrg

Buffalo Springfield - Sit Down I Think I Love You (1967) - Not a hit, but still one of my favorite Buffalo Springfield tracks. Enjoy!
