Certainly nearly all of the first album, which being more garage-y is very much my favourite. Also 'The Castle' from the second album 'Da Capo' is a cracker you need to own. Also I doubt any compilation will make space for a 19 minute odyssey like 'Revelation', which holds my attention right up until the drum solo, which like any other drum solo frankly takes about ten seconds to wear thin. Fortunately this occurs about 17 minutes in so you're not missing much by skipping to the end.
'Forever Changes' needs to be listened to as a whole. It's as essential a purchase as Sgt Pepper.
A while back I canvassed friends opinions on Love, how much I needed to get, and was advised to get the first three albums (you can do without expanded versions, the original albums are damn near unimprovable). The rest was pretty safe to bypass. I'm happy to pass that advice along to anyone else thinking about investigating this innovative sixties band.”
I've had
The Best Of Love CD for quite a few years now.
I remember reading some guff back in the late eighties or nineties about
Forever Changes being one of the greatest album ever made, and a superior sixties album to
Sgt. Pepper, Revolver and
Pet Sounds. I was also hearing from more than one other source that
Forever Changes was very over rated and that
Da Capo was much better and definitely the Love album to have, Additionally, I heard that the eponymous first album was definitely a must for any fan of sixties garage rock.
Undecided, I then stumbled across
The Best Of Love compilation album, which featured tracks from all three of those albums, so bought it as a sort of compromise.
I've enjoyed listening the
The Best Of Love for several years now, and it's only since the advent of Youtube and my hearing one or two great tracks by Love that are not on that compilation album, that I've started to question whether buying
The Best Of Love instead of the original first three Love albums had been the right thing to do. Oh well.
