Vabosity's Third Anniversary Review Of The Thread - Post #25.
We’ve now reached the half-way point in the
Third Anniversary Review, as it was always my intention that (assuming my enthusiasm doesn't wane) the Review would consist of 50 posts. At an average of two posts per week that will take us towards the end of the year, which seems like a good point to stop as we will then be closer to the fourth anniversary of the thread than the third anniversary!
50 posts means 250 tracks, but that is still a drop in the ocean compared to the Pandora’s Box of Delights that is the
Rare 60’s Classics thread. So if you’ve only recently discovered this thread, and like what you’ve heard in the
Third Anniversary Review, I urge you to go back to Page 1 and slowly but surely work your way through the thread listening to every wonderful piece of music that it has to offer; it will be well worth the effort.
There is no theme to today’s post in the
Third Anniversary Review. It just contains five tracks that I like a great deal that were first submitted (mainly) during the early days of the thread.
The Sonics - Since I Fell For You (1966)
First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
In Post #17 of the
Third Anniversary Review I said that the Sonics were arguably the best of all the American sixties garage bands. This ballad is very untypical, not really like anything else they recorded, which is perhaps why I like it so much.
The Anglos - Incense (1965)
First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
This is a fabulous track, by a group about which very little is known. The singer on this track is rumoured to be Steve Winwood, despite the fact that he has denied any involvement with the recording.
The American Breed - Bend Me Shape Me (1968)
First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
My favourite version of this song by a country mile; I much prefer it to the original version by the Outsiders and the UK hit version by Amen Corner.
The Outsiders - Girl In Love (1966)
First submitted to the thread in June 2010.
The Outsiders may not have recorded my favourite version of the aforementioned
Bend Me Shape Me, but this other track by them is exquisite.
The Association - Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies (1966)
First submitted to the thread in August 2011.
As I mentioned Pandora’s Box of Delights in my opening comments this one seems like an appropriate track to include in the post. It’s one of my favourite tracks by the Association who, along with quite a few other fine American sixties bands, were criminally ignored in the UK.
