In 1967 the band dropped the word Set from their name and dropped blue-eyed soul in favour of their own unique brand of psychedelia.

The Alan Bown - All Along the Watchtower (1968)
A fabulous cover that's very different from both the Bob Dylan original and the Jimi Hendrix hit versions. Well worth a listen.”

It started in 1956, although Britain didn't enter till 1957, with a song sung by someone called Patricia Bredin, a song that sounds like its from 1937 rather than 1957. We didn't do too well, and decided not to enter in 1958.

In 1958, Italy came third with one of the most famous Eurovision songs ever, "Volare", which became a big international hit when sung in English by Dean Martin, and although most people above a certain age know this song quite well, very few know it was originally a Eurovision song. Italy would win the contest for the first time in 1964 with "Non Ho L'Eta" by Gigliola Cinquetti, my favourite ever Eurovision song. Ten years later Gigliola Cinquetta would come second behind Abba with a song called "Si".

In 1959, Britain re-entered and came second with "Sing Little Birdie" by Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson (a song later immortalised in a Monty Python sketch).

In 1960 and 1961 we came second yet again with "Looking High High High" by Brian Johnson and "Are You Sure" by the Allisons respectively. We've come second 15 times in the history of the competition.

And Gigliola charted in the UK with that single as Go Before You Break My Heart. The Dutch act Mouth and Macneal from the Netherlands also charted with third place "I See A Star". Has that ever been equalled?

I'd like to nominate the Aerovons who were American teenagers with a Beatles' obsession. In 1969, they had the good fortune to record an album, "Resurrection", at Abbey Road. Sadly it wasn't released until 2003 when it was issued as a CD. This then was a lost band of 34 years. There were rumours of new material later in the last decade which would have been fascinating given their ages. Unfortunately, I am not aware that any has been released.

This morning (well Friday) Gareth Cottrell on Tameside Radio played Bobby Goldsboro's Voodoo Woman. It is rarely played, and I would not have even thought of it had he not played it.

Can I cheat and include one from 1971?

One of the best Van Morrison tracks that wasn't a Van Morrison track.

(It had nothing to with him!)

Link Wray - Black River Swamp

(I will keep to the remit in future)

You'll probably not know this, because it hasn't been posted to (and therefore not been on Page 1 of the list of threads) for quite some time, but there's also a Rare 70's Classics thread.

You're welcome.

There isn't a Rare 50's Classics thread (not yet anyway), so if you've got any rare tracks from the year 1959 (which is almost the 60's) you'll probably get away with posting them to this thread. Other posters have.

i havnt the same passion for the 70's music as i do the 60's, so despite starting the rare 70's it holds little interest. its upto others to use it.

ill not be starting a rare 50's thread as i know nothing about the 50's really, and it holds no memories, unlike the 60's.

however, id be happy to see a rare 50's classics thread, if someone wants to orchestrate one that would be great. im sure it could be a long running popular one, but would take abit of committment to keep it running.

ill be continuing later
