I believe it was originally recorded in 1968.

It later became popular in northern soul circles and was re-released in the 70s.
i kinda suspected that might be the case, hence i mentioned my book!

fair play

A much better take of Release Me from 1968 , surpassing Engelbert's rather limp version .

I agree with you about Engelbert Humperdinck's version being limp. Enjoyed the Johnny Adams version though.

Great version.

Much prefer George Benson doing jazz to the pop-soul stuff he had success with in the eighties.

Easy mistake to make tbh. It must have been a bit of a surprise for many of these artists from the US to learn their music was being revived in the UK during the 70s. Much of that music didn't do particularly well when it was first released.

Some of these guys had some incredible moves. I get sore muscles the next day just by watching that!

I reckon I could just about manage this though.

Back on topic though - sorry if this one has been mentioned already:

Kinks - Autumn Almanac. Ace!

Yo no worries mushyman. I didn't think you were harsh.

You're right - sorry about that - I didn't realise it had been so popular!

I'll try again....this one reached number 39 in 1967 (according to wikipedia). Whether it's a classic or not is much more difficult to establish. I love it cause my first girlfriend and I used to babysit, and the only tape we could find in the house was 'Reader's Digest Best Of The Monkees.' Ironically I ran into her again years later and she's now my wife.

oh the term 'classic' referrs to it being old... it doesnt have to be a 'class' track, so anything either unpopular (but scraped the top 20) or a minor hit (under top 20) is the general guideline.

i posted one yesterday that got to #13 but you never hear of it, its never on radio playlist or on 60's compilations. so it counts.
