I like the band name more than anything, and the track while nothing special is decent enough:-

This is Cantaloupe Island by pianist Herbie Hancock, from his 1964 Blue Note album Empyrean Isles - the trumpet player is Freddie Hubbard:

There have been quite few comments on this thread by various posters about some great American sixties bands who were criminally ignored in this country. Here's a couple of very good tracks by a great British sixties band who were also criminally ignored in this (their home) country:-

The Zombies - Care Of Cell 44 (1968)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afrdo2qneoI&feature=kp

The Zombies - I Love You (1965)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtx-UZjoKtw&feature=kp

Finally, here's a cover version of the previous song that I prefer to the original:-

People - I Love You (1968)

In a Brazilian vein, the original version of Mas Que Nada from 1963, written & performed by Jorge Ben:

I’ve decided to come out of hibernation (albeit temporarily) and make my first contribution to the thread for quite some time.

Although I was posting prolifically to the thread last year, that was with something that I termed Vabosity’s Third Anniversary Review which was essentially an excuse to repeat several of my favourite tracks originally submitted in the first three years of the thread’s existence, so it must be a good twelve months at least since I last submitted any track that was new to the thread.

I’m delighted to say, however, that the two tracks featured in this post are indeed new to the thread; the first a very obscure recording by the late, great Anthony Newley, and the second a Soul classic that is far from obscure, but which qualifies for the thread because it failed to chart in the UK.

Anthony Newley - Sweet Love Child (1969)
David Bowie and Anthony Newley are two very different types of singer, and yet the former often cites the latter as a major influence. Just like Bowie I too am a great admirer of Anthony Newley, an actor turned singer and songwriter who had a string of hits in the late fifties and early sixties with a mix of novelty ditties and conventional pop songs, but all sung in his very own unique and unconventional way. Sweet Love Child, which was recorded a good few years after Newley’s chart heyday, is a rather twee song, so it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it a great deal. The song was specifically written for inclusion in a long forgotten 1969 film directed by and starring Newley, the very bizarre and somewhat pretentious, but wonderfully titled Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness?

Aaron Neville - Tell It Like It Is (1967)
This thread has been around a long time (two weeks short of four years), so it did come as a bit of surprise to discover that this fine track (a Top Three single in the USA, but never a hit in the UK) has not previously been submitted to it, but then I suppose even a track as good as this one can slip through the net. Anyway, better late than never and here it is now.
