I see in the Sky+ HD Forum that BBC1 is going HD
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/news/p...s/may/hd.shtml

But will it need a viewing card?

No, it will be FTA like all other BBC channels, and obviously be on Freesat as well.

That's good news.

It will also (presumably) free slots on BBC HD so that even more of BBC2/3/4 can be Shown in HD.

Will F1 be upscaled at source or kept in SD on BBC2 or "not available" on BBC 1 HD??

If it's a simulcast channel anything not in HD will be upscaled, as I imagine most programming will be for a considerable time.

BBC One in HD will be made available to all digital television platforms offering HD channels – Freesat, Freeview, Sky and Virgin Media.
Cool,
As I finally dumped my Sky+ HD box today

Do you have any special knowledge about the BBC's progress to 100% HD production?

Presumably any films shown will be automatically scanned in HD and there's a fair bit already being shown.I seem to recollect that the BBC had a target date for 100% HD origination although whether that's still exists ...

Jepson - For films, it will depend on their contract and what they have available/and what format they are in.

Unfortunately we no longer have contacts inside the BBC, we used to have a good number - but most production is out sourced these days anyway.

A film will only be in HD if they paid for an HD version, and I would expect it to be a fair few years yet until everything they make (or order made) is in HD.

Just be patient

Just been looking at the stuff they are going to start filming in HD soon and it's a good list. EastEnders, Holby City, The One Show, The Apprentice, The Weakest Link and QI

Plans are also underway for HD moves for Songs Of Praise and Casualty, as well as Match Of The Day, A Question Of Sport, and Blue Peter.

I thought they scanned films themselves. Do you have a link for info on them buying pre-digitised in SG/HD.

Again, anything to back this up?

Just be patient.
I'm quite happy to wait. I just wondered where you were getting the information or whether you were just guessing.

Seems like the latter.

Is it true that they've been recording most one off and short run drama in HD for some time?

As I said above, all our contacts in the BBC have now gone, but as far as I was aware they got most films on video tape.

I have followed Nigels posts on various threads over the last few months and I don't believe he does guesses. If he does then they are pretty intuitive.

Well he still hasn't provided any links to back up his opinion so I think I'll stick to basing my opinion on what I've heard from official sources.

It's really not worth repeating as the sources I have are no different to anyone else's here.

'Someblokeoffaforum' isn't a reliable way to get information.

Broadcast companies buy films already formatted for broadcast from the distributors, either in SD or HD. No doubt HD copies cost more. I believe they're delivered to the broadcasters on videotape, such as HDCAM-SR.

Great news that Freesat are to get another HD channels and that BBC HD are to give more hours too...

But were on the EPG will it be and were has the space for the channel come from as we are told that space is not there for more channel in the UK narrow beam....?

Also this is because the BBC has been knocked back in the HD race with CH4 HD with E4 HD and now Film4 HD to come to virginmedia soon Plus FIVE HD also coming to some soon too.

And ITV 1 HD with longer hours and off the red button and on all platforms, now having more viewers now.

There is good tug of war for HD channels at this time with Sky & Virgin, which is great for all, so HD is here now....

Also would it be best for BBC to spend few pennies now and change BBC HD to BBC Two HD and so that names are in line with SD channels and would help public that do not watch Internet forums...?

As many of the shows on BBC HD are shown on other BBC SD channels a new way of showing the paying UK public HD by it's channels are needed now, by renaming that is in line with ALL other HD channels which are named with SD name ending with HD......???????

a) BBC have enough space on their current BBC HD transponder for another HD channel.

b) It's happened because of Five HD failing to get a Freeview HD slot,

c) BBC Two HD is not possible, as much of BBC HD's content is from BBC3/4/CBeebies/CBBC.

Not quite, there are only 8.6Mbps of null packets, they'll have to move at least one of the BBC Ones off to 10802H, if they can find space for the other one, they may be able to switch to S2, creating space for C4 HD.
