Buying Records from Reviews/Cover/Band Name Without Hearing the Music
Did you ever do this? Quite often I'd buy a vinyl record from a Melody Maker review. Most notably REM - "Murmurs" - best decision ever made.
The Chills - Kaleidoscope World - I think that was based on the artwork and the copy on the sleeve. It seemed £4.49 couldn't be completely wasted. "Pink Frost" alone was worth that. The Del Fuegos - Boston, Mass. - I was completely into American jangly guitar bands, and I think I bought this because of the name and I'd never bought a similar album on that basis and felt I'd lost out. "Don't Run Wild" still kills me. Album playing as I write this. Similar with The Swimming Pool Qs, Rain Parade, True West, Wire Train and The Beat Farmers. Torch Song - Wish Thing - Sleeve artwork and band pictures Blue Oyster Cult - Cultosaurus Erectus - Free poster and they'd been referenced in the comic book "The Defenders" and sounded intriguing. "Deadline" is mesmeric. The Chameleons - What Does Anything Mean, Basically? - The title was probably what gripped me. I still own all of these albums, apart from The Swimming Pool Qs. |

Sometimes I'll check out an album based on reviews, with mixed results though. In particular, Light and Magic by Ladytron was one I was delighted with, though Is This It by The Strokes, for instance I found less favourable. I used to go by Teletext reviews alot back in the day but like I said it was a bit hit and miss.
I did once judge an album by it's cover, for some reason I bought Lou Reeds Transformer, turned out to be one of my all time favourite albums. Sometimes I'll get a song in my head and not have a clue where it came from or who even sang it. Like once I woke up one morning humming 'The One I Love', after doing a bit of research, I found out it was an old REM track and then went on to discover the rest of their work and became a bit of a fan. Spotifys great for trying new stuff. Not so long ago I was bombarded with adverts on there for Pete Yorn's new album. Every five minutes there'd be an ad, it was so f#cking annoying so in the end I checked it out and I'm awfully glad I did 'cus again, it's one of those albums I've grown to love. Taking a musical leap of faith is great though, everyone should do it. |

I bought Walking on a dream - the empire of the suns album just because of the album cover. Never heard any of thier music before, just loved the art work on the front. It is one of my fave albums, i love it!

I bought Enter Shikari's debut album five minutes after reading a review in Kerrang. I'm glad I did, I think they're a pretty fun band.

There are one or two of my favourite bands whose albums I would buy automatically.
I remember the days before the internet when you had to buy an album without hearing it, only to discover the only decent song was the single release. Thankfully those days are over. |
