Saw one of these today, DigiHome DG250DTRA08 250GB Freeview Recorder or 50 quid at QD store, not bad, they were being snapped up.
My mate is after a freeview + box, are these OK.

That is one of the Vestel PVRs with the Top Up TV software installed. There is a thread here with some links to other threads. Before considering a PVR with the TUTV software have a read through some of the threads on the Top Up TV sub-forum here. Personally I would avoid it.

I would definitely buy another one, had mine for a year now and not a problem with it.

Funnily enough I've just been testing out this model - I would never have touched it with a bargepole but the owner has gone abroad and left it in my care The interface is unfamiliar to "proper" Digihome PVR owners, and I can't see how to skip during playback (no manual available), but so far it's performing OK. Have set up a series recording, will do feedback in a week or two.

No freezing or other glitches YET

Looks like they still haven't got round to adding skip then.

But lots of different versions of basically the same manual on http://www.topuptv.com/help+centre/downloads though.

I wonder if the omission of Skip is deliberate, bearing in mind that the channels included in Top-up won't want their ads easily avoided?

(Thanks for the manual link, PTD )

AFAIK TUTV don't have any "Live" Channels in their services anymore, You can subscribe to ESPN through them for an extra fee.. The overnight downloads of the "TV Favourites" don't have any adverts. TUTV sprinkle the user interface with their own adverts.

I would check how "accurate" recordings set using the Freeview+ guide are, I find the beginning of programmes are frequently missed and recordings fail completely with sometimes the Series Record setting being lost. I often get large chunks of programme content from the same Channel added before and after the required programme which plays havoc with other scheduled recordings.

The box I'm using isn't subscribed to TUTV, and I'm only using it because it's situated conveniently to test the PQ of my new Sony HD TV* when fed with an SD PVR.

I'll set up some more 'series accurate recordings' and let you know how it performs.

*I think it's going to have to go back - I'm just not an LCD person, no matter how perfect the picture is

I look forward to it.

I feel the same. I somehow feel the picture on my CRT Panasonic looks more "realistic" than any LCD screen I have seen.

Well I reckon it's certainly deliberate, but I'm inclined to think that it's somehow linked with the epg and favourites patent infringement issues. I haven't really followed the story closely for the last year or so though so I don't know the current situation.

I have not seen any discussion in TUTV Forums relating the lack of Skip to patent issues. The removal of Favourites functionality has been stated by TUTV to be because of licence issues.

Sure, but it's hard to imagine it's just a technical difficulty. If Gemstar can sue over something as banal as a favourites list who knows what else has TUTV quaking in their boots. Lets start a baseless rumour and get someone to confirm or deny it.

Here's an interesting story:

LCD TV Association
LCD TV Matters
June 2010
p27

...
Virgin Media wins TV software patent judgment against Rovi
A US High Court has reaffirmed the difficulty of defending software programs by finding for Virgin Media. Virgin
Media was sued by Gemstar, now owned by Rovi, for breaching user interface intellectual property it had
successfully licensed to other TV operators. A court has now declared the patents invalid. One in particular, EP
(UK) 1377049, was a computer program and could not be protected, the judge ruled. Patent EP0969662 describes
a TV listing in grid form, which the judge said was not a technical effect, while EP1613066 describes an option for
recording shows from the EPG. According to Justice Mann: “The patent describes a computer taking some
information, getting some input from the user, and then giving the user the information he wants… No more than
that.” Rovi says it will appeal the decision.
