I'm making a connection!

Please could somebody help!

I have a Sony STR-DE375 dolby 5.1 reciever and need to make a connection with my Samsung DVD player.

I have both optical and s-video outputs from the DVD player but the receiver only has the 6 phono type connections for each 5.1 speaker channel. The dvd player also has 2 pairs of phono type outputs which will connect to the sony receiver but my question is this -

Will I get the 5.1 surround sound?

If not, is there some sort of s-video lead that splits off in to the 6 phono connectors or similar? Does anyone have any other solutions?

Sorry to sound a bit vague, feel free to ask for more info if you can help!

Thanks in advance

If your Sony reciever doesn't have an optical input, only the 6 phono inputs and your Samsung doesn't have the 6 phono outputs, only the optical output it sounds like the two wont directly connect.

The 2 phono output will only give stereo sound and maybe Dolby Pro-Logic.

S-Video, as the name suggests, is only for a video feed not sound.

I don't know if you can get a converter from optical to 6 phono leads.

The sort of amplifier you have is designed for surround sound sources that have the dolby digital / DTS decoders built in.
Your choices are to either;
- replace the DVD player with one that produces 6 x phono out, like http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/5...vd-player.html
- replace the amplifier with one that has a dolby digital / DTS decoder.

You might be able to find a dolby digital / dts pre-amplifier, but the costs will likely be just as much.

By the sound of it your dvd player & reciever dont have a built in decoder, theres no way round it you'll have to replace one of them or buy an amplifier with a DD/DTS decoder to go in between your play and reciever
