Grr! Hate my hair but have rescently found an odd why of 'liking' it..

Hi

I may not be alone when I say that I am one of those people who always have a fault about themselves- and that is usually my hair that comes top of my list. I really cannot stand it. It's thin and fine (hey a rhyme) and even when it's had a 'descent' cut it's pretty much the same. I've spent ages in the mirror before now trying to part it to see if I liked it or swept it back or tried something that made me think 'ooh that isn't half bad'. But no. Until this.... (so sorry if this sounds weird)....

I wash my hair regularly..sometimes even once a day (when apparently it should be no more than 3x a week according to my doctor but still) but Saturday was the last time I washed my hair and last night I noticed that my hair wasn't greasy but it felt....different...cannot describe it, I guess it kinda was grease (hate that word) but it wasn't noticable or smelly or anything like that- basically what I'm trying to say is...I once again took myself to the mirror...tried a parting or whatever it was I did...and I found myself spending less time doing it and actually liking the end product as my hair seemed 'heavier' and easier to 'style'.

Has anyone else had this experience or continues to do so because they find it does their hair justice. Just me then?

I've never had the courage to go a few days without washing my hair. I wash it at least once a day at the moment, a minimum of 7 times a week. When I have tried in the past I find that my face feels greasy why my hair touches it. Its awful
On the other hand, I do wish I could go without washing it, but I cant.

Thin hair can look greasy even when it isn't. My sister always had not just fine but very thin hair too and it sapped her confidence. She gets round it by always dressing it up by wearing a hairband or pretty scarf.
I am glad that you have found a new way of dressing your hair Molybecks and it is making you feel better. Well done.

Melanie Sykes looks like she has thin hair too but I think she makes the mistake of using too many products which over shines it, thus making it look greasy when it isn't.

I've had the same hairstyle since I was a teenager and I'm nearing 40 now..oh and I'm a woman..I cant do nothing with it..it's thin and sometimes it's like rats tails the other it's like straw..done all different things over the years..spent loads on it ..even hair dye doesn't stay in my hair too long..I can get a nice dark colour put in and after a week or so I notice it's starting to turn that red/brown again..so now I just wash it and put the straightners through it and get on with my day..I once seen a bit on the tv show Bread where the ma was talking about her hubby freddie and his wild hair..she said he had sagittarius hair with a mind of it's own..always thought that was funny as I'm a sagittarius and my hair has a mind of it's own..so I have sagittarius hair

Well this is kind of the problem... (in reference to the post who said about their sister/friend who dresses their hair)..I rescently have started to wear a hat (well in November actually) and that's kind of been my 'safety blanket' around the issue- because the hair problem is actually a problem- mentally anyway. I know it sounds silly but we all have our hang ups im sure. But now the warm weather is nearing it's kinda looking rediculous me wearing a hat all the time (it's not really a summer hat either). But various times I have tried leaving the house without wearing it- leaving home looking 'fine' then looking in the next mirror (wherever that may be) and it looks complete crap. I use hairspray as my hair would not stay without it. Simple as. But even that seems to have a sloppy greasy look sometimes.

I have tried all different kinds of hairsprays in the past...starting from the cheap tesco style to the current £3.50 got2b hairspray (which is as described as a glue type fixture..i.e. firm hold) which is quite good.

Tip as well...if you have thin hair then straightening really shows it. I do occasionally straighten my hair (probably once or twice a week) and I always do it the night before. As they say if you sleep on it it gives it the thicker effect, nethertheless still thin but with hairspray or whatever it doesn't show.

Yep, have them now. Deffinatly does improve for thickness I agree but i'm just never 100% fully happy.

I guess if i was to have the best hair in the world I would still find fault with it.

Try hair thickening shampoos and conditioners. Joico is a good brand - but quite pricey.

I have often heard stylists say (or read them write) that it is easier to style hair that is not freshly washed as the natural oils make hair easier to manipulate, and as you say it adds some weight to the hair. I have 2 friends with thin hair who started using boar bristle brushes to distribut the oil and just washed it using water and nothing else. Took a few weeks but after about 4-6 weeks they found their hair more managable and thicker feeling. Apparently shampoos and such, even those made for volume and thickness, still contain ingredients that leave hair feeling greasy sooner. Though if you really can't go without shampoo it might be better to use a clarifying one.

Thanks for the replies

Well I washed my hair last night and am going to leave it tonight, then hopefully tomorrow i may have better luck with styling it- or atleast getting it to look sightable.

The only thing is though, my hair can tend to get greasy easier, so by tomorrow night I think i'll have to wash it again, which will leave it fresh and clean for Wed.

it's so weird, it's like i'm wishing for greasy hair- I really am not, just want some life to it! lol

Thanks i'll remember that.

It's awful really, I mean some people take pride in their hair as it's what does them justice and makes them feel good...I just feel like a slob with it tbh. It's actually quite nerving too, i mean i know it's stupid but if your a little self concious anyway it really doesn't do you any favours!

Does dry shampoo work alright on thin/fine hair? I'm going to Download next month and am having hair worries, am thinking about taking some dry shampoo but fear it will just clag my hair up. I'm another victim of the thin, fine hair curse! I usually wash it 6 or 7 times a week too. It's just so obvious when it's icky.

Dry shampoo is great on fine thin hair.
When my hair is going through a bad stage (needs a trim or hi-lites), I use it immediately after washing & drying my hair for volume.

Hi-lites make hair coarser too.
