Alpha Centauri
No.6
31-05-2010
Am finally getting round to watch the Curse of Peladon for the first time, and just in fits of laughter as the Alpha Centauri delegate makes his/her/its first appearance, just how on earth did the production team get it so very very wrong

Alpha Centauri is arguably one of the most beloved supporting characters of the Pertwee era. Have you ever seen a creature from that region of space? If not, how do you know it wouldn't look like a dick in a cloak?

With the voice of a 9 year old schoolgirl from the 1950s???

Has to be one of the most memorable and entertaining characters in DW history. How on earth did the production team get it so very very right?

I still prefer the creature from the Creature in the Pit for innuendo value...

Don't be so mean about Jon Pertwee!

Actually the other delegate, the mini face of boh thing in the dome, is just as bad as Alpha Centauri...

Arcturus? That gave me nightmares as a kid. I still think it looks pretty convincing.

The whole thing makes some of Russel T Davies' worst excesses seem rather tame, god knows what the reaction have been if this had been made by the revival production team!

I mean, its got a mute bloke, a shrunken head in a dome, the ice warriors, a on of a previous Doctor, blokes with beards and ginger highlights, a hermaphrodie penis in a cloak, royalty, alegendary monster, the Tardis falling off the cliff and Jon Pertwee and Jo posing as a Royal...it's bonkers!!

And there was me thinking "at last someone else has noticed the similarity with Alpha Centauri and the one eyed monster theme running through this season."

Just me then

Wrong? WRONG?

I had to respond to this because Alpha Centauri are my favourite aliens ever. I'd love them to be reprised in New Who.

Was it the 4th Doctor who was in the Alpha Centauri table tennis club?

Boo. I love Alpha Centauri. Saw original broadcast. Terrific character and I am very fond of, er, it.

I was very much older before I saw a repeat and realised someone must have monkeyed around with the master tapes - because that wasn't the utterly real "filmed on another planet" rendition that I definitely saw when I was slightly shorter.

But please, don't mock Alpha Centauri. Or I'll come and show you my venusian aikido.

==================================

Seconded! One of the great non-regular characters (twice not really counting as regular.) The "rough edges" of the design-execution are all part of the charm.

hats off to Ysanne Churchman and Stuart Fell!

Very wrong? What are you on about? Alpha Centauri is a brilliant creation.
