This is the thread to register speculation and facts for local, national and international radio coverage of all types of football during 2010/2011.

I am looking forward to seeing how Absolute Radio intend to cover the new season.

Enjoy your summer holidays (interrupted no doubt by a certain tournament in South Africa - good luck England).

Same here.

I'm hoping Absolute's Premier League coverage will take a similar form to that of Today FM, who hold Saturday 3pm rights in the Republic of Ireland.

A serious commentary team, an hour of music-free build-up between 2-3pm, an hour of music-free reaction between 5-6pm and reporters at all of the other Saturday Premier League games (something which I believe is crucial to retaining an audience, rather than just attracting fans of the two clubs who happen to be involved in the commentary game on any particular day) is what I feel they need to do to be taken seriously and make their coverage a success.

It'll also be interesting to see what changes are made to the weekend sports output on their rival national radio rights-holding stations.

On talkSPORT, I suspect Nigel Pearson and Stan Collymore will switch from doing Saturday 3pm commentaries to the newly-acquired 5.30pm fixtures, but will they also handle the Sunday afternoon games or will a different pairing be given this opportunity?

I am particularly looking forward to the return of talkSPORT's Saturday afternoon Around the Grounds show after three seasons of it being off the airwaves. But who will the pundits be who'll be joining Adrian Durham on the show, and will they be studio based?

The last time Around the Grounds was a regular fixture on talkSPORT's Saturday schedule, the studio panel was Alvin Martin and Gary Stevens. But with Alvin linked to a coaching role at West Ham and Gary coaching in Azerbaijan it's highly unlikely either will be involved next season.

Instead I think Ray Parlour and Bobby Gould look the favourites to be Adrian's co-hosts, with Matt Holland and Phil Parkes possibly having outside chances of landing expert roles as well. But will they be based in the studio or will they be analysising games alongside reporters at the grounds, as has been the case across talkSPORT in recent seasons?

Over on Radio Five Live, it has been reported that station bosses are looking to have their Sunday Sport show presented from "across the country". Does this mean they are thinking of doing a Radio Leeds-esque presenting arrangement from the talkSPORT commentary games?

And now talkSPORT no longer have Saturday 3pm commentary rights, where will Five Live Sport be anchored from on Saturday afternoons next season?

Will it be presented from the grounds playing host to the Absolute commentaries? The talkSPORT 5.30pm games? One of Five Live's commentaries? Or will they return to a studio base as they had prior to 2007/08?

I am looking forward to seeing what changes are afoot at the three national radio stations that cover Premier League football going into next season.

The Irish Examiner is reporting that Today FM and Newstalk 106-108fm have retained their Premier League radio rights deals, which serve the Republic of Ireland on a national basis, at the expense of RTE Radio.

RTÉ Television has retained highlights rights to the Premier League up to and including the 2012/2013 season.

However, it is believed that the national broadcaster has failed to pinch the Saturday live radio rights from Today FM.

Newstalk Radio is understood to have retained Sunday live commentary rights.

I believe the duration of the Irish radio deal would reflect that of the UK national radio deals, and thus span three seasons between 2010/11 and 2012/13.

Does anyone know what the exact specifics of the packages that Today FM and Newstalk hold are?

Over the past few seasons, it would appear to me that Newstalk have rights to two Sunday games (mostly the 1.30pm and 4pm live Sky Sports games but occasionally matches at other times) while Today FM have a Saturday 3pm commentary each league weekend plus a set amount of Saturday early kick-offs, which seems to work out at something like one game in this timeslot per month. Anyone know chapter and verse on this one?

The quoting of the article suggests they attempted to pinch the Saturday rights, which suggests a strategy of now bidding for events they previously had no interest in (a lá Magners League on TV).

They used to have a rather well-regarded Friday night radio programme that featured rugby and domestic football, until it got relegated from MW to LW, where it was allowed to die.

Occasionally observing their appalling attempts to cover GAA on Sunday afternoons (leaving commentaries on games to go to ad breaks, returning for interviews and general prattling twaddle before deigning to return to the game 15 minutes after they left), then the Premier League is much much much better off on Today FM.

Well, I've not heard much of RTE Radio's sports coverage so can't comment on that, but I'd agree with you in the sense that I really like Today FM's coverage so am glad it is continuing.

Despite being a music station with little in the way of sport elsewhere in the schedule, it takes its football coverage seriously and has been an enjoyable listen whenever I've tuned in.

As I've said above, Today FM's Premier League Live would be the perfect blueprint for Absolute to look at when they are considering how they should arrange their Saturday afternoon coverage next season.

It seems Ian Payne is doing some shows back on BBC Radio 5 Live on Up All Night. It's a bit of a fall from grace for him given that he was presenting afternoons and Sport on Five just a few years ago before moving to Sky Sports.

I don't think it's a massive fall from grace for Ian Payne - everyone has to start (or return) somewhere, and I reckon covering Up All Night will only prove to be temporary before he goes on to receive better spots in the schedule.

It is unreasonable to expect Five Live to change their World Cup plans to accommodate him when he became available, although it wouldn't surprise me if he helps out with their Wimbledon coverage in some way or does daytime/Sports Extra presenting during the World Cup from London during the group stage.

Glad Payne is back with Five Live as he is the logical choice to become the new presenter of their Sunday sport output, should BBC TV get their way and have Colin Murray dedicate himself to MOTD2 on that day.

Getting rid of Spoony and Marcotti is a great move. Wonder how Green feels about being moved to Sundays, is probably not too bothered.

Chapman and Savage should be a good thing in my view and the show must come from somewhere different in the UK when Derby are playing away from home.

No news on presenters yet, wouldn't be surprised to see Chapman on Sunday sport. Would be great to get rid of Murray completely from 5Live

So that'll mean....

Live Premier League commentary on talkSPORT v Sports Report, followed by 606 with Chappers and Robbie Savage on 5 Live between 1700-2000 on a Saturday.

Spoony yes, Marcotti I'm not sure about.

Gab has a long history of co-presenting the more considered Sunday evening football phone-ins on both talkSPORT and Five Live which I think he is well suited to. I listened to the final hour of 606 for the first time in ages last Sunday and I really enjoyed his interaction with the callers.

Granted pairing him with Spoony didn't play to his strengths and I doubt he'd get on with Green, but I think he worked well with Chapman when I heard them together. So at the very least I think he'd be a good choice of reserve on the Saturdays when Savage can't make 606 next season.

Some points - while 606 on Saturday has gained an hour (in a roundabout way), at the same time Sunday 606 loses an hour. And seeing as Alan Green will be doing the Sunday 606, does this suggest that he will be regularly commentating on Five Live's live 4pm game most weekends?

I wonder what this means for Marcotti. Will Five Live find a new role for him or will he now look to concentrate on TV broadcasting alongside his writing? With Moz Dee (who reputedly brought him to Five Live) now their programme controller, could a return to talkSPORT be on the cards?

Should Alvin Martin either take a coaching role at West Ham United as has been reported in the papers or be chosen to be talkSPORT's co-commentator on their Sunday 1.30pm games, then Marcotti's old job on Football First on Sunday would become available. I think that would be a sensible move for him to make if Five Live can no longer offer him anything.

The Premier League fixtures are out, and on the TV thread they're predicting the opening weekend's television games will be:

Chelsea v West Brom
Manchester United v Newcastle
Liverpool v Arsenal
Tottenham v Manchester City

That would leave the 3:00pm games (5 Live and Absolute) on Saturday to be:

Aston Villa v West Ham
Blackburn v Everton
Blackpool v Wigan
Bolton v Fulham
Sunderland v Birmingham
Wolves v Stoke

With the disappearance of Sky Sports News from freeview it's turned out quite well that talkSPORT will be returning to the rolling scores format at 3pm

Well it won't be Wolves vs. Stoke as the police will have that match be played on a Sunday

I can see 5 Live picking Blackpool vs Wigan and Absolute picking Astona Villa vs West Ham

Indeed, although this is disappointing news for Freeview viewers like myself, it is a real boost to talkSPORT going into the new season.

What with there now only being one BBCi platform on Freeview (meaning Score is sometimes not broadcast in full on there), it could be that talkSPORT will often find themselves in the position of being the only widely available free-to-air channel offering a full Around the Grounds programme on Saturdays.

The Premier League fixtures are out, and on the TV thread they're predicting the opening weekend's television games will be:

Chelsea v West Brom

If the opening weekend's TV games are the ones you and others have predicted, then I think Five Live will feel obliged to go for Blackpool v Wigan with Sir Jim on co-commentary duty.

If Absolute follow the talkSPORT model of selecting games that will generate them the largest possible audience (which I believe they will), then they should pick Aston Villa v West Ham.

I wonder what will happen to 6-0-6 if Derby are scheduled in the Saturday evening slot, will Mark Chapman go solo or they find someone else.

If BBC show a game on the opening day as they did last year then Leeds v Derby would have a good chance of getting picked I'd think.

I would guess it'll be either Dion Dublin or, if he's still with Five Live by then, Gab Marcotti subbing for Savage on those occasions.

Marcotti was on tonight if that is anything to go by towards him staying. I would say that either him or Steve Claridge would be the cover for Savage

Stevenage v Portsmouth in the First Round of the Carling Cup has been moved to Monday 9th August due to live TV coverage on Sky Sports. I'd imagine BBC Radio 5 Live will want to cover this game as well.

I understand that BBC Radio Leicester has secured a new deal to provide live commentary of Leicester City for the next three years.

Leeds vs Derby opening day of season confirmed for BBC TV coverage @ 5.15pm

I don't think Robbie Savage will be on 606 that week.

Could Stan Collymore be leaving talkSPORT?

World Cup pundit Stan Collymore, whose relationship with Talksport is complicated by his split from agent Paul Mace who negotiated his radio deal, is being linked with a permanent move to California to work for ESPN.
