BBC WM

Terry Goodwin presenting WM Sport from The Mailbox

League One
Oldham Athletic v Walsall - Andrew Dawkins

So, there's three games to go in the Football League season. Walsall are in the League One relegation zone on goal difference, being one of three clubs locked on 44 points. The Saddlers have a long distance away game on Easter Monday, with none of WM's other sports teams playing and the station airing a shadow schedule due to the Bank Holiday. The perfect opportunity to do a Walsall commentary? Is it heck. Just not good enough.

WM's sports coverage is very good in many areas but their coverage of their fifth league club is certainly isn't one of them. Ten, even five years ago, today's game would have been a cast-iron certainty to be a commentary. That it isn't on today just shows how far their coverage of Walsall has fallen.

An interesting tweet from Darren Fletcher, who says he is off to Germany to commentate on Schalke vs Man Utd tomorrow, which is a little surprising. Assuming that's with Alan Green and that Mike Ingham is away as he hasn't commentated over Easter I would have thought John Murray or Simon Brotherton would have been the choice for the English side's European semi final. A sign of how highly Fletcher is rated by the station, this season I think he's moved ahead of the likes of Conor McNamara and Ian Dennis in the commentary pecking order. Be interesting to see who does the other semi on Wednesday.

He also makes a point of stressing that 5 Live are on site, presumably a dig at talkSPORT?

Yes, I'd imagine it is.

However, I'm just gonna ignore it as I really can't be arsed to get into that argument for the 183th time this year. I think all that's been said about it has been said already.

442 are you on Talksport's side with the off tube issue?

Common sense has prevailed and 5Live will have Brum vs Wolves comm on Sunday according to their live comms page which is unlikely to be wrong.

5Live get the better game here, local derby and a game that matters, the game at Anfield doesn't really matter

I think that's probably the best policy. It's a discussion that has been done to death. Why Darren feels the need to covertly bring it up yet again is beyond me, but at least it'll be the last time he can do so for the next 4 to 5 months.
