This is really interesting thanks.

My interest is where it sees each commentator ranked. Liam MacLeod strangely in my opinion is now number 1, yet David Begg has done the biggest domestic games. Did David Begg do any games outwith November-March?

Paul Mitchell seems to have dropped way down the list from where he was with TV and radio.

Here is a geeky question. How many Saturdays during the season has Richard Gordon not presented? He seems to have done them all!

David Begg did 3 games in August:
11/08/10 - Sweden v. Scotland
14/08/10 - Inverness CT v. Celtic
21/08/10 - Hibernian v. Rangers

He then didn't do another commentary until:
11/12/10 - St Mirren v. St Johnstone

After this he did pretty much every week through until:
27/03/11 - Brazil v. Scotland

The time David Begg was back covered the run of consecutive Old Firm games and included Rangers' Europa League run. Before David returned Liam had got the majority of the big games - Celtic's Europa League games and the majority of Rangers Champions League games plus the first Old Firm game of the season. It is also worth bearing in mind that Liam also did TV commentary for all the Scotland games during this time - both live and for highlight programs. Rob MacLean did the last Old Firm game. I would suggest that Liam is number one with Rob a close number two if you discount David Begg.

Quote:

I would agree, bear in mind the list doesn't take into account weeks he covered games for MOTD (by my reckoning twice) or Sportscene highlights (cup weekends). There were also occassions I noticed where commentators did a Saturday and a Sunday game, or weaker commentators were used and Paul wasn't. Whether this is due to other factors or not I couldn't speculate.

By my reckoning Richard has presented on every Saturday. The only times he did commentaries were mid-week games, or Sunday games. On these occasions, Kenny MacIntyre presented other than the last two weeks in the season when Jim Spence presented (1st Division play-offs). I can't say exactly how many episodes of Sportsound he presented though as I haven't broken down the games on my spreadsheet by day, they have been lumped by weekend. However he has presented every Sportsound show, with a live commentary other than the times he did a commentary himself. I can't remember one show where it was someone else hosting.

That's right, she was in vision very clearly for a brief moment during the Sky Sports coverage. I also spotted Mark Clemmit (BBC TV) and Kev Lawrence (talkSPORT) on Sky during the period between full-time and the trophy presentation.

After criticising them yesterday, I must say that talkSPORT's coverage of the League One Play-Off Final today was brilliant.

I didn't listen to their commentary on the match itself but I heard a most of their build-up and post-match hours and it was everything their League Two Final coverage wasn't (although to be fair Dants and Alv made the best of a bad hand at their end on Saturday). They made it sound like an important, special occasion and Kev Lawrence (who presents a breakfast radio show in Peterborough outside of his talkSPORT reporting) was an excellent choice of pitchside reporter due to his familiarity with the winning team.

Adrian Durham was first class today, as good as long-term listeners know he can be, indeed it's probably the best he's sounded since anchoring coverage of the Play-Off Finals last year. He's so knowledgeable about the Football League and combining that with his audible nervous excitement of watching his team in a big final made his involvement in the coverage really stand out.

He was great to listen to today and hearing him at the top of his game served as a real reminder of exactly why he was so highly rated on forums like this before he went down the controversial route on the evening and drivetime programmes. On his day, he is still among the best sports presenters on the dial.

I wonder if David Begg will be used on the golf coverage this summer? Presumably the Scottish Open will be live on Radio Scotland.

For Richard Gordon to present that much is quite remarkable. He really is excellent.

What are your thoughts for next season? More of the same again with Liam establishing himself as number 1? Do you rate him as a lead commentator? I have to say during the presentation ceremony at the Aviva last night, I thought we was very weak and just tries to say too much about anything in a very short space of time.

I imagine he would be used he has been the last two years. I wonder whether Richard Gordon will present though as a newly debuted "The Golf Show" had Rob MacLean and Adam Tait as hosts, so when it comes to the "Open All Mic" style Scottish and British Opens will they host?

But I would agree Richard Gordon is a fantastic presenter. You really notice a difference when Kenny MacIntyre presents as Richard can really keep a discussion going and yet end it when necissary. His presenting style is great and I have yet to hear anything phase him. I would suggest that loosing Richard Gordon would be a bigger blow than anything else for Sportsound.

I would see Liam establishing himself more yes. Personally I like him, he has a great enthusiasm for the game and his accent works really well on commentary. I'm aware people don't like him on TV and I didn't hear the end of the game last night, but I find that when a game gets exciting and theres a lot happening he really gets involved and tells the story well. He's even made some mid-week Inverness/St Johnstone games sound exciting, his goal calls get used alot in BBC highlight packages for Sportsound. If all the commentators were doing a game and I had to listen to one it would be with Liam. I particularly like his radio pairings with Craig Patterson.

I feel Rob MacLean has sounded better as the season has gone on. At the start I wasn't a huge fan of his but I have noticed a change. I enjoy listening to all the commentators bar afew who did a handfull of games - the awful David MacMillan and Martin Dowden and David McDaid were weak on calls.

And a final note, Jim Spence is an enjoyable commentator to listen to, his commentaries aren't particularly serious, very relaxed approach but very informative - I listened to his game over the Celtic and Rangers games on the last day of the season.

I guess the game's not on either Swansea Sound or The Wave as they can direct listeners to national sister station talkSPORT?

It seems it'll be on

BBC Radio Cymru

David is hosting from Cardiff, and I've also just heard Steve Flemming from Wembley Way.

My Swansea Mux signal is struggling, but there will be commentary on Swansea Sound.

And no Real Radio, you weren't *first with the news* that Dave Jones has left Cardiff City, as Rob Phillips broke the news at just after half 12.

Correction - Roger Hughes is at pitchside.

I was expecting Ian Abrahams in this role as he wasn't reading the sports bulletins on The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast this morning (the rest of the on-air team worked the bank holiday), but as it doesn't sound like they have someone with the fans on Wembley Way I guess he must be having a rare day off.

...which begs the question:

Why not wait until it's all officially mentioned on-air rather than post incorrect information?

(I know all of us can be a little over-eager at times).

Indeed, I was a bit over eager - I'm getting quite excited about what hopefully will be a great match - and I thought Moose was a shoe-in to be on the touchline given his involvement in past years. Indeed he's been heard on the coverage since doing pre-recorded interview with Reading manager Brian McDermott, with Roger Hughes heard interviewing his opposite number Brendan Rogers earlier in the week.

Enjoy the game everyone.
