Saturday 3pm commentaries tend to only have one commentator (and a summariser, of course).

Neil Warnock has been commenting on his forthcoming work with talkSPORT in his column in the Independent: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/f...n-2052246.html

Quote:
“I've really enjoyed doing some radio work in the past six months and now I have been asked to do a slot with Talksport on as many Sunday afternoons as I can make. I am looking forward to starting tomorrow with Alan Brazil. We go on air at noon, which should be late enough for Alan to make it.

I find it quite relaxing, a break from management, so please don't phone in if you are going to be abusive. I am leaving myself open if we lose but the main thrust is the Premier League so, tomorrow, we'll be looking forward to Liverpool v Arsenal. It should be a cracker.”

Very surprised that Alan Green ain't at Anfield tomorrow. Unless he is still on hols or has drastically reduced his commentary commitments

Green ain't on 606 tomorrow so he is still on holiday, we might not hear him till September

Gold's commentator for Aston Villa v West Ham is Steve Hermon, a Beacon newsreader who usually does commentaries for the Walsall website. I wonder where Nathan Alleyne is today?

BBC WM's coverage team is as I posted in #273, although Mike Taylor's solo commentary on Wolves v Stoke is only going out on the Wolverhampton DAB multiplex, with DAB in Birmingham taking the Sunderland v Birmingham City game from 95.6FM.

Saturday 14th August - IRN and RTE Radio 1

Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City - Nigel Bidmead
Aston Villa v West Ham United - Clive Edwards (also preview, half-time and full-time reports for BFBS Radio)
Blackburn Rovers v Everton - Tom Parker
Bolton Wanderers v Fulham - Peter Smith
Sunderland v Birmingham City - Bill Mantle
Wigan Athletic v Blackpool - Darren Stannage
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Stoke City - Kevin Hatchard

RTE were taking live reports from the IRN reporters, who are supplied by agency World Sports Communications.

Last season, RTE's reports were a mix of TalkSport and IRN reporters. but today no talkSPORT reporters were featured. This may be connected with talkSPORT losing their 3 pm Saturday commentaries, and therefore having more demands on their match reporters.

Off-topic but of interest to the talkSPORT listeners on here.

Regular talkSPORT reporter Andy Clarke is commentating on Wolves v Stoke City for the Sky Sports Premier League highlights show Football First and the International Feed this afternoon. He's alongside Tony Gale.

I suspect you are right, although I doubt talkSPORT see it as "losing" those 3pm Saturday matches - more like "upgrading" their commentaries.

I think Absolute have done very well so far on their first ever live commentary on Rock & Roll Football. Jim Proudfoot has been excellent as ever and, perhaps surprisingly, Phil Brown has combined well with him.

I'm looking forward to hearing Sam Matterface's commentary debut on talkSPORT tonight on their first 5.30pm live game of the season.

Joe McGoldrick (sp?) and Michael Williams are Absolute's studio-based round-up reporters. Do either of those names ring any bells to anyone on here?

They're currently hosting between the conclusion of the live game and 5pm, when Absolute Radio Extra & AM will link back up with Russ and Wrighty.

With so many local Premier League commentaries to choose from in my region I've never listened to a Talksport commentary before but I'm impressed.

Wasn't sure what to expect from Sam Matterface but seems a good commentator and already linking up well with Collymore. I'm liking how he just makes his point quick and sharp without wittering on. Makes Five Live's efforts a bit stale in comparison.

Who are these people? With it being such a small industry I'm amazed that 2 people I've never heard of managed to pop up on a national station.

Also why are there 2 of them? Are they some kind of double act from somewhere?

They sounded as if they were broadcasting from some kind of cupboard. "Joe" especially sounded like he was live from a cell.

BBC Radio Leeds, and official websites of Huddersfield Town and Bradford City
studio: James (can't rembmer surname)
Huddersfield Town verses Tranmere Rovers (FM, and official Huddersfield Town website)
commentator: Paul Ogden
summariser: Kieran O'Regan
Bradford City verses Stevenage (AM and DAB, and official Bradford City website)
commentator: Derm Tanner
summariser: John Hendrie

Derm Tanner hosted the postmatch hour on all platforms. He hosted it on AM and DAB last week too. The minute's silence before Huddersfield Town's match, which Paul Ogden was not given prior notice of, was interupted by somebody saying "minutes silence" twice, and I presume it was a radio reporter because he was close to Paul Ogden. Paul Ogden also apologised when he thought a fan's fowl language was heard when it was quiet.

I agree with all of what you have written.

Listened to the whole of Chelsea v Albion on talkSPORT tonight and Sam and Stan gelled very well from the off, it's hard to believe that they'd never worked together before. As you say Sam Matterface was very good, he has a slick and incisive style and delivered the goals very well. Like you I didn't know what to expect but I was very impressed by him.

I know what you mean by your last point - after hearing the commentaries on Absolute and talkSPORT today, having to listen to tomorrow's games on 5 Live will seem like a bit of a come down.
