Their commentary team at Selhurst Park is Nick Godwin and Bradley Allen. I think this commentary is going out on all platforms.

Earlier I tuned in to Absolute Radio and noticed how quiet the match was. I don't think they use an effects mic, but I don't know why, because it's radio and the atmosphere adds to the enjoyment of matches.

If Boxing Day was a Thursday, who would have the comm rights for the PL? Is there a bank holiday deal like there is for TV?

I'd imagine TS would have hoped for more early KO's this BD

Mark do you have any idea where Begg has been all season? Was he welcomed back by Richard Gordon.

I hope what you say about the Motson role is not correct and they almost just eased him back yesterday. Time will tell.

They didn't mention his return at all prior to going to the live commentaries. I got a bit of a surprise when I went to listen to the commentary to get the commentators to hear his voice.

Richard Gordon did eventually allude to it on Open All Mics with something along the lines of "it's good to have David Begg back after his couple of months off" so I would assume he is back for the remainder of the season. No reason has been given for his absence, nor was it really mentioned whenever anyone mentioned his absence on the Sportsound Facebook.

I wouldn't necissarily know if he was given the dregs or just eased back in to the program. I was actually generally surprised by some of the commentary teams yesterday as it is not often that Rob MacLean does Saturday commentaries, and using Gordon Smith for the St Mirren/St Johnstone match over the Inverness/Rangers match was also unexpected though I imagine that the distance involved may not have appealed to him. I guess for David Begg we shall see what games he gets over the next couple of weeks.

As I gather from Open All Mics that John Barnes and Paul Mitchell were both at other games yesterday (St Johnstone/St Mirren and Partick Thistle/Ross County respectively) but I think that may have been for TV.

”

Looking ahead, I noticed on Sunday 16th January Birmingham v Villa and Sunderland v Newcastle both kick off at 12pm, giving Talksport another clash. If they only do one commentary then the non televised Tyne-Wear derby would probably be the option.

They'll also have Liverpool v Everton at 2:05pm so not a bad day for Talksport that one.

Having listened to Aston Villa v West Brom on Absolute yesterday, I noticed that too.

Perhaps it was a technical issue, as I remember them having similar effects mic problems when I tuned into their commentary on the first day of the Premier League season.

I'm by no means certain here, so if anyone knows better please feel free to correct me, but I'm fairly sure that games that take place on bank holidays would fall into 5 Live's Monday/Tuesday package and/or talkSPORT's Saturday 5.30pm/Wednesday package, unless said public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday of course (as Boxing Day does this year).

I know the Saturday 3pm packages don't cover bank holidays, as talkSPORT were never able to do commentaries on games played on non-Saturday public holidays, despite those programmes effectively being Saturday matchrounds. So expect Absolute Radio to miss out on doing commentaries on such afternoons.

This is something I brought up a few pages back, although personally given talkSPORT's West Midlands leanings I see them going with the Second City Derby regardless of whether it's televised or not. Can you see Stan Collymore being on Wearside when Villa are playing Blues?

On that occasion I could see them splitting their output and offering one game on AM and the other on DAB. Theoretically, if they were to lose a Sunday/Wednesday commentary to the weather over the Christmas period they'd have one game to make up and might decide to do commentary on all three games that Sunday.

From Charles Sale in the Daily Mail:

Quote:
“The curse of the Chilean miners saw the singer hired to entertain them at a function during their visit to Old Trafford get stuck in a lift on his way up to the third-floor Stretford suite.

But crooner Cole Page was only trapped for 10 minutes in rather less harrowing circumstances than the 69 days the Chileans, who were guests of Sir Bobby Charlton, spent underground before their dramatic rescue.

The match also saw the toxic relationship between TalkSport and 5 Live reach a new low. This was due to 5 Live going into meltdown because the enthusiastic comments of Talk's Stan Collymore, seated next to them, could be clearly heard by BBC listeners.

There is no love lost between Collymore and 5 Live following the former Liverpool player's vocal complaints about the way BBC's Alan Green dismissed Talk during the World Cup.
