Question re the doctor being decontaminated
butlerx12

Maybe I misunderstood this, but during the decontamination scene did the doctor not say 'the human bacteria is keeping me alive'. If he did say that then, why would have have human bacteria keeping him alive, if he's a timelord?

in the movie in 1996 he said he was half human

Not quite.

They were decontaminating him to remove everything not human in his body

Since he is not human it would have killed him

I think what he meant was, that as an alien he is susceptible to viruses etc from other worlds. The human bacteria he has picked up helps his immunity system fight off any advancing human viruses. A bit like when we get injections of a virus to allow our bodies to fight off possible infection.

If such bacteria are removed from the Doctor he will then be at risk of infection whilst on Earth from something that probably wouldn't harm a human being.

This makes more sense than the reply I gave.

I get this, and it makes total sense. But Im sure he said the human bacteria were keeping him alive? Does anyone know the exact words he said?

When he did the forest scene coming back to amy, he sounds distinctly as if he has a blocked nose. Cold, or crying?

Prob no connection at all but hey I'll put it in there!

There have been a number of times when Matt sounds like he has a blocked nose. I think its just how his voice sounds when he talks in a certain way.

Anything intended to work a certain way on a human body could potentially have very different effects on the Doctor. The third Doctor once said Aspirin would be lethal to him.

And cyanide is not - if he detoxes.

I think it was a little confusing in the script - I'm sure the scientist says that the process is removing all the human bacteria, and the Doctor says it's removing all the things that keep him alive. I don't think they're necessarily the same things.

I think the way to look at it is this; if you removed ALL bacteria from a human body, it would kill us. We have bacteria in us that is actually helpful and important to the working of our bodies (our gut is full of them, for instance). This would suggest that the decontamination can identify these helpful bacteria and doesn't kill them.

Now we must assume that Time Lords have a similar physiology, based on what the Doctor says here. However, their helpful bacteria is not going to be the same as the humans' helpful bacteria. Therefore the decontamination machine wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the Doctor's helpful bacteria and good, old, nasty germs.

Therefore it would decontaminate him of all the little bugs that help his body work, because they are unknowns.

I think it's a Northampton thing. I find I have trouble with some words and it can sound a bit like a blocked nose.

Stated quite clearly in the movie but never addressed since. I think until the situation is clarified, it's best left alone.

"If you remove all the human bacteria in me you remove half the things keeping me alive"

Or maybe:

"If you remove all the human bacteria in me you also remove half the things keeping me alive".

I took it to mean that the process of removing human bacteria would coincidentally destroy some intrinsic biological necessity of timelord life.

The irony of all this is that if you removed all the human bacteria from the average human they would die a horrible death over the course of the next few days.

EDIT: Apologies for reposting - dgembadgemba got there first.

Wise counsel, Tingram.

I've got a Beast Below style "Forget" button in my house. Anything distressing like that happens in the show and zap; forgotten.

I'll be pressing it after posting this. Having left an Amy style "Don't go back to that thread" reminder post-it, of course.
