To those who said:

"Pointless", "Useless", "It'll flop it has no external memory", "Woeful, no one will buy as you can't plug your camera in". . . .It seems Apple know best after all.

They know their customer target.

The other bit matters far less.

Apple knows that despite the deficiencies of this gadget it has its fanbois and it's those that Apple relies on to swell its coffers which of course they always do.

Who cares how many ipads are being sold? The relentless waves of apple stories over recent months, most of which are either of no interest or pure speculation, is quite tiresome.

I just don't get the hype. Iphones and Ipod touch, fair enough... nice devices and do a good job at what they're aimed at. For the ipad, when I see the price and what it does (or rather doesn't) offer it amazes me that people are so excited.

Why do I want to spend hundreds of pounds on a web browsing device that doesn't let me see every website on the web? It's aimed at computer novices by being simple... how many will get home to realise they can't do everything they thought it could?

No USB connectivity, no expansion slots, tiny storage capacity for the size of the device, stuck to the horrible i-tunes software (check out the Zune software as to how syncing/online shop/music management can look... i.e. gorgeous), glossy overly reflective fingerprint magnet screen...

I can buy a decent laptop for the same price and know that I can do EVERYTHING that I could possibly want to.

It's more the fact that people said "for certain" that it would flop.

These seem people would certainly "care" if it had not sold many. . . .but suddenly. . .they don't comment on great sales.

YOU don't get the hype, because YOU are the one that is missing the entire point of the ipad. As I said in the other thread, I ALREADY own a high spec laptop, and as much as i like it, it isn't all that portable and it runs hot and the battery life is pants.

When I want a laptop, I WILL USE MY LAPTOP. To all of those slightly more intelligent people who 'get it' it is supposed to be used IN ADDITION to your laptop, it is a [very nice] complimentary bit of kit to your laptop. Expensive, I admit, but perfect for people like me who do a lot of browsing whilst sat on the sofa in front of the telly. I also would like an Internet radio and a e-reader, but to buy each of them separately would cost a small fortune, therefore the ipad is perfect for those uses.

You are exactly right... it is expensive for what it is.

Not a big surprise. Apple could release an iTurd and it would sell millions.

Yes... But actually you do have a device that is well designed and has a lot of thought and development put into it. I know that you may not see it the way I do but being an engineer I appreciate the development that will have gone into it. If I had an iPhone or iPod Touch already then I doubt that I would have bought one. However the development of the product won't have come cheap, and this is reflected in the price.

Fair point. Having worked in IT for 10 years I look for maximum "bang per buck"... as the saying goes. Apple products are always good looking and interesting. They are also normally expensive. It'll be interesting to see if the other manufacturers follow with equally nice slates running Windows/Chrome/Linux.

My main problem is the over the top fawning for what isn't as ground breaking as is made out. The iPhone and Ipod were more ground breaking than this is. Interestingly many in the IT media aren't falling over this product...

It just goes to show there are two million people who'll buy into Apple's hype about this ridiculously oversized iPod touch you can't conveniently carry with you on the move.

Some people will buy anything with the Apple logo on based on past good experiences. I fear they may think twice about doing so again based on their iPad experience this time next year. After a few months of finding they've blown a lot of money on what is basically a toy that is much less functional than a way cheaper netbook, they may regret their purchase.

Of course the Apple believers will always say they love it, even if secretly they were rather disappointed with it and it is mainly gathering dust next year.

Indeed, people always pay more for fashion and lifestyle products. Apple are no different to any other designer brand marketing form over function.

2 million sounds like a lot - but is there any evidence that it's crossed over into a non-Apple user market? From all that I've seen / read so far, it's being bought by the converted.

It'd be interesting to see if it has crossed over. If so, then yes - it's a remarkable product.

As I said in my last post, this is the first Apple product I have ever owned. Up until this I have been anti Apple brigade. I had considered getting the iPod touch but didn't really like the small screen. The Dell streak is £429 so not ghat much cheaper, and I was contemplating getting one instead od the iPad but I didn't like the smaller screen.

Considering its coverage is not limited to apple fan sites, yea i think so.

Anyways we are long past the time when apple things are only bought by mac owners. Since the ipod/iphone/ipad barely anyone considers owning a mac as necessary to jumping on that bandwagon.

When you consider this is selling faster than the iPhone this is remarkable.

I got mine from a client in the US and have had it about a month now. I haven't taken my laptop out with me in all that time. I have done presentations, written articles and run all my productivity off it now.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. I was wondering whether there was any evidence / research published on who was buying the Ipad. Also, Apple-users obviously include ipod/iphone owners, not just those with a mac.

I dunno, i'm just extremely dubious that it could only be mac users, the market percentage of mac is still very tiny, its just unlikely. and I don't see how you really could include iphone/ipod users as mac users, because probably the majority these days use pc's with those devices. Its the only way they could possibly have such a large percentage of the market for those devices. Furthermore if steve jobs knew he could sell such huge volumes of ipads/ipods etc without pc users, he would have made mac ownership a prerequisite.

I think many are buying because they fall for apples marketing - its cool and fashionable to have a apple product. They almost make you believe its the next best thing and you will die without one. But practically and technically the iPad is flawed- if it was £200 cheaper then yeah it will replace my ipod touch.

What Apple marketing would this be?
