Can't connect iPod ITouch to wifi

Just purchased new iTouch, 3rd generation and I'm having a problem connecting to my wifi. I get into the area to connect, it finds my wifi signal with no problem. I tap my Network name and it takes me to the next stage which is to enter my password. I do this, but the word "Join" bottom right of my iTouch screen does not turn blue to allow me to enter my password, but if I add any other character the word "Join" does turn blue, but this then is obviously the wrong password and it will not then connect me. My password is 7 characters long.

Does anyone have any idea what it is I'm doing wrong?

Many thanks

Maybe the iTouch is expecting a minimum 8 character password?

What type of security are you running on your WiFi? If it is WEP you may want to change to WPA (assuming everything you use can support WPA). WPA is much more secure. And I would use a longer password.

In general the longer and more random the password the harder it is to crack. Also harder to remember I know, but do you want a secure set-up or one that any old passing chav can leech off and download who knows what dodgy material at your expense?

I'm running WPA2 security.

OK so that is good as a start.

I would suggest though that you change the password for something longer and more random. OK it does mean having to change everything else you use with WiFi but it will increase the security even further and if the iTouch can only work with an 8 character or longer password it sorts that problem out as well.

I've now found out that the password I should use is in fact the security code on the bottom of the router. This is a 12 character code, I enter this, the word "Join" now turns blue and allows me to enter the password, but I still am unable to connect to my wifi.

Once you have entered the security code for the WiFi that is it. If it is correct then you are connected. If not it will throw you off. If it is refusing you access then either you are connecting to the wrong network or are entering the wrong password.

A third option is that some routers have a button on the side that you have to press to tell it you want to connect another device. Perhaps you need to do that?

What router do you have? That may help diagnose the problem. It could be that the security code entered into the actual router has been changed and no longer matches the one on the label.

Siemens router, have now got it to work. It still says can't connect and I have to tap the dismiss button, but after I then tap the Home button it connects me. Can you tell me if I should have to enter the password each time I log on,which is what is happening, this seems a bit odd to me, or can I save it? But I now cant get my email to work, after entering all my info (incoming and outgoing mail servers), I get a message says "Cannot connect using SSL. Any ideas on this one please?

Many thanks

Regarding whether you should enter the password each time you connect, no you shouldn't.

When I first got my iPod touch I tried to connect to the internet. It gave me a list of routers in the area. I selected mine and entered the password. I have done exactly the same at work. Connection is now seamless whether at home or work. It just connects. As simple as that.

Regarding the SSL, are you sure that you've actually got a password on your router? Do you have anything else connected via wi-fi that is working properly?

Have you had a look in the router settings to confirm what it is?

are you sure your not entering the admin password to login to the router and not the access password?

Is your Password in CAPS...? I kept putting my password in and it wouldn't work until I realised that it should be all in Caps.

I can only assume that because I have to tap the dismiss button and then the "Home" button before my connection can be made, that my settings for my WiFi are not being saved and so I have to enter them in each time. I am absolutely certain that all the entries I am making are the correct ones, but still no joy with the email connection.

One other thing, the security setting on my router is WPA2-PSK/WPA-PSK, could this be affecting my connection? If I change this to WPA2/WPA or WPA2 (AES), it asks for a RADIUS server secret key..what the hell is that, I'm very reluctant to mess with this to be honest.

Regarding your email problem - go into your email settings, and click on 'advanced'. Make sure that 'use SSL' is turned off.

If you've just bought the iTouch then you're entitled to a single technical support question from Apple (generous aren't they!!) with the first 90 days unless you bought their Apple Care package. Further to that you could try the Apple Discussions Forum where Apple users post their technical queries.

Have you got "mac filtering" set on your router ?
That means that any device that tries to connect wirelessly to your router needs the "allow this mac address" to connect
u might have set this up before and forgotten ?
I have this set on my router but sometimes forget when i try to connect a new device, so have to log in to the router and click "add" the device

Mac filtering in switched on but I've added the address of my iTouch to it. What is most odd about all this is the fact that it connects me after I tap the dismiss button and then tap the "Home". It makes the connection but does not save it for the next time.
