They can be so depressing. Why would I want to watch people falling out and being beaten up and threatened all the time? Its too realistic for my liking. Not a day goes by when you don't hear news or gossip of a nature similiar to stuff going on in EE. And I don't think its because its true to life. I believe we've been force fed it for so many years now we're all just accepting thats the way real life is. Its a bad influence on British society.I don't want to end up one of these sad people who never miss an episode in case something exciting happens. I've got to the point now where I've made the conscious decision to avoid ever watching any british or austrailian soaps ever again. Life is depressing enough without watching EEand having all the bad stuff shoved down your throat all the time. Is it any wonder more people than ever are on antidepressants?

The drama is just too much, everybody knows it's nothing like real life, but then again it's for entertainment...

Yes, its all for entertainment!

I don't know How you can call Neighbours depressing though! You say you will never watch Australian soaps, yet Neighbours is a nice light hearted soap!

I only manage Emmerdale, Corrie and EE and often Hollyoaks, Doctors, Neighbours, Home and away, Family Affairs etc...are no goes for me, i do have a social life and get out of the house! I can't fit anymore in otherwise i'd be a recluse sitting indoors all day watching soaps.

Ok well maybe neighbours isn't in the same category as EE but after years of watching the same old storylines over and over it does get stale. Why is it when most people get married on soaps they either end up cheating or cheated on or dead . EE seems to show all the worst things about humanity all the time. It makes you start wondering if actually people are really worth bothering about. All anyone seems to do is hurt and betray each other. It might make good telly but actually I'd rather watch friends. Bring back those great totally unrealistic US soaps like Sunset Beach. Now that was so funny. You knew none of it was real, but you still were compelled to watch for entertainment value!

Okay a bit too much for reality does happen down "soap way" but if it had everyone living normal lives, people would switch off in droves, i mean there's usually one spectacular storyline a year, fire, explosion etc...it is totally NO that would not happen every few years in the same street feeling but it's all to keep us watching.#]

I mean in Corrie, Mike Baldwins factory as been burnt down twice recently and Janice has been inside during both of them! Just an observation but like i said, gotta keep people watching.

I agree. So many people critise the soaps for being unrealistic - but that's the point. At the end of the day, they are still fiction - and I for one, would certainly want to watch entertainment over realism.

Also agree with the person who wanted to bring back Sunset Beach - what a fantastic programme - it knew exactly what it was - it was unrealistic, entertaining & funny. Any programme that features an evil twin called Derek has to be worth a watch.

lol exactly. SB was just pure escapism and full entertainment! Same with Days of our Lives really as that always seemed quite similar imo but not as OTT as SB! At the moment, Days of our Lives have had a serial kiler storyline and have just shown that the victims are not dead but are living in a parallel salem on a Caribbean island!!!

I emailed them when Terry & Gabby was axed saying to pick up The Young and the Restless as they now had an hour free and its perfect for a morning slot, but i got no reply!

ITV2 would be great for a US soap, all the seem to show is repeats, so atleast a US soap would offer something different and unique that no other channel has!

I am one of those sad people that you say we are!! I don't watch any of the soaps except for Corrie, but I watch it religiously and I have done for some years now.

I tape episodes if I'm out, and I get really upset if I miss one, and search frantically for the repeat on ITV2.

Corrie is fantastic. You might not like it but it's because you've not got involved in the storylines. Once you get in and know what it's all on about, there's no getting out, it's brilliant.

Besides it is an excellent exploration of human interactions and emotions, especially considering the brilliant Todd and Karl storyline at the moment. You have to put your hands together for the producers, scriptwriters and actors on this storyline, they have all done a brilliant job.

So, I'm sorry but I don't agree with your opinion!!!

British and Australian Soaps are the Best in the World compared to American Soaps

I.E, US soaps are set in rich lifestyles and a bit snubbish and crap.

Remember my point about too much realism. I understand there will always be a need for some people to sit indoors and watch the nearest thing they've got to real life in this case, eastenders, but I've got enough of the gritty realism in my life not not to need nor want to watch it.
There was a period in my life when I used to be addicted to watching soaps but now, years later, even when I'm really bored, I just don't bother. Just don't find it interesting anymore. Besides whats the point, it might be realistic but ITS NOT REAL.
And I don't actually care if people don't agree with my opinion, there is no right or wrong opinion. We all like watching different things, other people probably would not like the stuff I really enjoy watching but you won't see me crying over it.

you know perfectly well that H&A i a very popular soap in Britain, NZ and Ireland and the most popular in Oz.
If you actually watched it you'd realize it's much better than EE.

There are no US soaps shown at all in the UK, not on any of the terrestrial channels and not on cable/sky!

That's the point, it's supposed to be realistic! There's no point watching something if it is completely unrealistic and false.

For your information norfolkgenie, I have got a real life and watching Corrie is part of it. If you were a dedicated fan and hadn't drifted away because of 'boredom' you would realise that it is a good programme to watch.

If you don't watch it anymore, how can you be qualified to judge it? You are tarring it with the same brush of years ago when you did watch it. Try appreciating what you see on the screen in front of you first before making wild statements.

Lets agree to disagree, ok you like it, I don't, but then again, I don't feel the need to watch it anymore, not constantly like everyone else. Maybe if a story line comes up that is interesting, then I'll watch the odd episode (very occasionally but don't tell anyone, ) but otherwise I've got sky and I'm happy with that! I'll accept that there are persons like yourself who may watch soaps and still have an active social life but i bet there are alot of that don't and watching these soaps is all the excitement is all they get. Ever!

Norfolkgenie, I have to agree with you this time! I'm glad you can fairly say that there are people like me who still do have a life but watch Corrie like mad, but I also have to admit something myself.

I know someone who doesn't do anything except for clean her house all day long, then watch all the soaps... and when i say ALL I really mean ALL, the whole lot, not just the British ones, all those like Neighbours and Home and Away too. Now that is sad, I have to say!

I'm glad we've come to an agreement!!!!!
