Hi everyone my daughter has given me her old 8gb ipodtouch when i gave her a new 32g ipodtouch for her birthday. Now she did not register the 8gb and i cannot get into the repair/service page on the apple website as you need to put in the serial number but because its not registered you cannot proceed to get a price to replace the screen as it has a huge crack right across the screen.I rang the Apple store in Belfast but they cannot give me a price they just say to go online.Has anyone left an ipod touch 8gb to get a replacement screen fitted in an apple store and how much did it cost and how long did it take.I know that replacement screens can be bought online but would like to find out If it is going to be too expensive i would just buy a new 8gb and get a years warrenty on it.Hope someone can help.Cheers Francis

There are websites online showing how to replace screens, and 3rd party shops online selling the screens. It might not be cost effective any other way.

You can find the serial number on the back of your iTouch if that is any help. You may need a magnifying glass to read it as it is quite small, but you'll find it just below the '8GB' marking near the bottom.

I doubt it will be economic for Apple to do it as it will be an 'Out of Warranty service' which according to

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/#uk

will be either £82 (1st gen) or £116 (2nd gen)

So it still actually works despite the glass screen being cracked? I must admit I'm amazed the touch panel can survive something like that.

As others have said, a DIY screen repair is certainly the cheapest option, but you can probably get it done by a (non-Apple authorised) third-partyfor a fair price (a price which is worthwhile having it done unlike what Apple charge where you may as well buy a new one) if you don't feel up to replacing the screen on it yourself. I must admit I'd probably pay to have it done provided the fitting cost wasn't excessive, as whilst I can build desktop PCs almost in my sleep, a very compact gadget like the iTouch with probably tiny connectors and screws is a whole different basket of chickens.

Hi Princegaz yes it still works,I usually just listen to songs on it and surf the web .The screen protector is still on it ,The crack go,s from the top left corner to almost the botton right corner .I watched the video and would be tempted to give a replacement screen a go , It does seem fiddley but not impossible.Francis
