Hi, that might sound like a really dumb question, but that's me. Dumb.

Anyway, enough of the unfashionably middle-class White British self-deprecation! Lol. I bought the CD a few years ago just after it charted because I'd heard a few bits of Coldplay on the radio and also heard some very good reviews of X and Y.

Thing is, I never really listened to it properly until last year. Even then, I probably only did because the guy next to me in the office was listening to their latest album and clearly enjoying it (he let me have a little listen too).

So when I got home I dug out the CD and put it in and listened. And again, and again, and again. So once again I'm completely behind the times, but I don't care. The Cure, U2, even a bit of Pink Floyd, can all be found there, can't they? It's an excellent CD.

Does it rate as a classic like The Joshua Tree or Jonie Mitchell's Ladies of the Canyon or Neil Young's Harvest or the Rage Against the Machine album?

I personally really like it and prefer it to Viva La Vida (just). A classic? I would say so or future classic at least.

Parachutes is much better. It's the only album of theirs I like.

I love 'X&Y' - and actually 'Parachutes' is my least favourite Coldplay album!

Funny enough, I believe that Coldplay themselves have actually slated 'X&Y' and said it was probably their worst work, yet I think its brilliant and agree with you that its a classic album! I think you'd enjoy their previous album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' as well; IMO those 2 are about equal in quality.

Can't agree (sorry). I thought X and Y suffered from being massively over-produced. Polished beyond the point of perfection, there was no spontaneity there at all - which, given the intimacy of some of Chris Martin's lyrics and vocals made no sense whatsoever....

X and Y was really good in fact. Along with 'Parachutes' . Viva La Vida has to be the weakest out of all their albums

Coldplay can produce good albums but not classic stuff like...

Definitely Maybe - Oasis
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
Revolver - The Beatles
OK Computer - Radiohead (although I don't like them I have to list this)
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths

As for X & Y that is IMO an average album, the only really great songs from it were 'a message' and 'fix you', not that consistent. It's better than Viva La Vida which is bloody boring.

Rush of Blood and Parachutes remain their best work.

At least this discussion shows that Coldplay aren't a 'one album band' - different people have different favourite albums. For the record, I think I'd rank them from best to least fave:

A Rush of Blood to the Head
X&Y
Viva La Vida
Parachutes

I used to really like Coldplay, but X&Y for me was the album where I realised they'd gone down a road that I thought was a shame given how good Parachutes was. It was overproduced and bland. I don't think there's anything in X&Y that packs any kind of 'punch' at all, it's got this glitzy produced sheen all over it and for the first time a lot of the songs seem to fall quite obviously into a worn formula, there's nothing particularly meaningful or memorable.

I think it's a pretty weak album. Viva La Vida marked them disappearing even further up their own bums. Shame.

It came as a big surprise to find that Coldplay would record a song like Fix You, which is my favourite song of theirs. I had believed that their early 21st century masterpiece Yellow would remain my favourite of theirs but they bettered it!

Viva La Vida was a run-of-the-mill track compared to Violet Hill but not as over-rated as Trouble or Speed of Sound.

Not for me. None of the songs on this or the next album have the impact of say, The Scientist for me. And Speed of Sound was a lazy re-hash of Clocks which deservedly got beaten to No 1 in the singles chart by Crazy Frog!
