why wouldn't you just push the file to dropbox or similar, where it is available to anyone you like, without having to plug anything in or pair up a bluetooth connection? Bluetooth's slouchy file transfer is a bit 1990s now. way too slow for today's multimedia files. How long do you reckon it'd take to send a 2 minute 720p HD video over bluetooth?

Most of my file transfer is between my computer and phone. Being able to use bluetooth for that like I could "back the old days" would be useful.

I actually use FTP at the moment.

Bluetooth can be handy when someone has a pic on their phone that you want and so forth, I admit its not a feature I would use often or a deal breaker but it would be welcome even if it was just for pictures and short videos.

We all know Apple will never allow it for music as the labels would go apeshit at them.

At the moment you are not able to pre order, but it is likely that will change as we get to the 15th. As part of the registration form they ask will you be wanting to buy on release date or are you just signing up for info. If you click on the buy on day of release option they even ask you to fill in a form so they can possibly send you a Micro SIM before the release date.

Due to the huge demand there will be, o2 would be mad not to have some form of pre order method in place before the launch, even if it is not the same as Apple's 15th of June date.

Unless you work for o2 of course and know something different and definite.”

The o2 website is for more information at this stage.

I do work for o2 but I cant comment further at this stage with regards to the possiblility of preordering.

I see O2 are going to do a special upgrade for a limited time to the Iphone 4 if your already in a contract. How much do you think they will charge?

All I hope is that existing customers looking to upgrade get priority, if O2 can't give me a phone at launch and Vodafone can then they will lose my business.

I'm out of contract on my 3G so I can only assume i'll be a "new customer" with the advantage of already having an O2 account. It seems they want to send me a micro-SIM out before the phone is launched!

Yes, me too.

No brownie points for fulfilling our contracts, which is a bit meh but to be expected!

I can't believe simple things like full Bluetooth capability to swap pictures and files, and yes, even music, between phones has not made it to the iPhone unless you jailbreak it. No other mobile phone maker has a problem with people sending whatever they want over Bluetooth so why have Apple? Simple things like changing the befault black background on the home screen to another colour or God forbid, a picture aren't possible too unles you hack the phone. And I can't believe it has taken them 4 models to finally include a bloody flash with their camera.

I only recently started using Apple products and while they are fun and great to use, they are seriously feature lacking. ”

if you typically have a lot of apps, music and photos on the iPhone, surely just syncing it rather than using BT is as good a way as any of doing things?

given the features and ease of use of the iPhone, are you seriously complaining about not being able to put a background pic behind the app icons, that you wouldn't even be able to see because of all the app icons?

as for the new phone - it seems to pretty much knock it out of the park with the main shortcomings the 3GS one had - ie the screen and the camera.

that new screen is going to look stunning, and presumably not physically be capable of being bettered for a long time.

and the new camera with its backlit wotsit and, yes, flash, look like it'll take significantly better pictures.

add in the multitasking and folders, not to mention HD video recording and iMovie, and it looks an amazing phone which, for my money, just does things better and more intuitively than other phones.

Watching the text version of the keynote I just felt there was a killer feature missing, although I don't know what it is.

Apart from calls and texts, I mainly use my iPhone for music and increasingly for listening to radio stations online. OK, that's something where the developers have come to the fore and produced apps like Wunderadio which I use every day. But I can't help wondering whether Apple could have come up with a killer app for listening to music and radio, something like a more powerful version of the desktop iTunes program.

It's probably just me, but I would rather have a better-designed music player than a movie editor. Something I'd use ten times a day rather than something I'd maybe use once a year.

I went Desire only a couple of weeks ago and although I really like the look of this new iPhone, it is the high tariffs that put me off.

I have the equivalent of a £35/month iPhone tariff for £22.50 with no upfront costs plus a free dongle.

That's a big saving over a 2 year contract.

How long will Apple insist on higher tariffs for their phone with all these Androids about. Judging by the forums and FB there will be plenty of takers and I would have been one of them but I just could not justify the cost.

BTW I see O2 mentioned alot so are they going to be the only ones with iPhone 4?

No, Vodafone are getting it too, they've put something on their site similar to what O2 have where you can register your interest. I imagine Orange will be getting it too but it wasn't mentioned on the site this morning.

The screen will look stunning, but with a bit of digging, its not that much of a leap forward.

2007 - Toshiba G900, 3" 800x480 screen 310dpi
2010 - iPhone 4, 329dpi.

It'll easily be equalled, assuming other manufacturers want to. The question over "will it be beaten". Possibly/probably.

Have you seen how good LED flashes are. Whilst its possible that Apple have done some magick with the LED, odds are it'll be useful as a torch, or in video recording. It may be useful relatively close up.

But having an LED and upping the pixel count from 3.2 to 5mp doesn't necessarily mean significantly better pictures. Slightly better, not significantly.

neither do, really. It's all in the lens and software.

I don't know about priority per se.

To give you an example last year on launch date staff were not allowed to get the new iphone on the date to allow as many customers to upgrade as possible. We were made to wait I think 2 weeks?

I suppose had I walked into the store and pretended to be a member of joe public I could have got away with it but it would have been without staff discount.

I know what you mean though!

And thats still not the complete story - its in the lens, sensor (quality, size) and post processing (ie. software). You could also say that quality control of the manufacturing process has a big say in the final quality - it'd be ridiculous to find that some of your finished products are fantastic, some others absolutely terrible .....

Despite my hatred of Apple fanboys and the people at of the conference who would seemingly start clapping even if Steve pissed all over the front row, this is the one Apple product I look forward to each year. I think they've done a good job with this one, (which they had to judging by the competition) - will probably pick it up

I can't wait to my upgrade! I am actually excited about this one, I haven't really seen any draw backs!

Unusual for Apple!

Quoting myself, how stupid ....

Bunch of pics, apparently untouched on the Apple website.

I say apparently untouched, as there is absolutely ZERO exif information in the supplied images. Which actually means that the images have been retouched, even if only the exif tags.

Thats a tad naughty of them, isn't it?

its a big leap for the iPhone though, which had become a shortcoming compared to other phones.

but with this, even if the spec is improved, it a case of virtually no improvement in practical terms.

if the human eye is incapable of differentiating any difference in dpi much above 300dpi, then there's very little point.

its not just about the flash or the pixel count though - in this case, the pixel size is the same, whereas often pixel size is reduced as count increases.

plus they're using backside illumination, which combined will allow more light to reach the sensors, which is what should improve the quality of the pics.

Does anyone know if you get the unlock code for your old iphone when you upgrade to a new one ?

My wife has a 3GS on 02 (18 month contract) and if I get her the new one I quite fancy using her 3GS to replace my ipod touch. Only prob is I am on Orange (work sim)

mine was just unlocked in iTunes after I applied for a code via email to o2.

Yep all 3 networks have sites that tell you naff all but you can register your interest.

The cynical side of me thinks they are waiting to see which one reveals pricing first so they can double check they are competitive
