Tony Gordon - Panto Villain
Just been watching some Alan Bradley stuff on Youtube.
Now there was a soap villain that you could take seriously. |

The scenes last week, where Tony was walking down the back street of Corrie and kept turning round to gurn into camera , were laugh out loud bad.

The thing is, Mark Eden's portrayal of Bradley was amazing. He was human, greedy, messed up but genuinely loved Rita, but felt let down by her not marrying him. With Tony Gordon, you are right, he gurns, he overacts and you can't take him seriously whatsoever.
20 Years or so the difference between the two. |

You gotta admit though, his insults and remarks are brilliant, Tony always had a way with words!

Hillman was often regarded as panto too, but he is still the most loved Corrie villain, same with Mad Maya

With a few exceptions you can count on a single hand, all soap villains are panto.
In fact all soap performances are panto with the silly facial expressions and the troubled looks over people's shoulders to convey what they are thinking to the viewer |

Well at the end of the day it is Corrie and not some gritty realistic ,'slice of life' show.
Soapy but enjoyable |

Panto or not, am I the only one that feels sorry for him? It was Carla and Liam that messed him up. He was overly cocky when he first arrived but that was all. Although it was seedy, you could easily tell that he fell for Maria and Baby Liam even though the guilt was always with him.

I wouldn't really call him a panto villain...
but perhaps that is because I hate Panto and have loved Tony's return- that term seems to be a derisory way of describing certain kinds of villains- but it is misplaced in my view- soaps need villains like Tony Tony reminds me more of those villains you get in films like Die Hard or Speed- a bit OTT, actor is clearly hamming it up a little but it's part of the entertainment (what was Dennis Hopper's great line in Speed- poor people are crazy Jack, I'm eccentric!) ....and I am not comparing Gray O'Brien to the wonderful late Dennis Hopper- just saying there is a place in dramas for villains that are a bit comical and get all the best lines! Tony's return has been a very welcome one- his scenes have been entertaining- particularly the contrast between how he treats Carla (a woman he once killed for) and 'saint' Maria- and his attachment to baby Liam is adorable even if he has lost it ![]() ![]() ![]() His return has been great to watch- compared to Molvin and all that Joe loan shark tripe- this has been a huge improvement

I wouldn't say Tony was a panto villain, Richard Hillman was though.

I agree with your points mainly, but I didn't find it funny at all, just cringeworthy. This is meant to be the dramatic climax to one of the big stories of the past few years, and just felt all the OTT cringey lines and delivery had no place in that.
Considering Gail's trial- which treats the audience like complete idiots and suggests someone could be convicted of murder; a) without any forensic evidence of any kind, b) on the testimony of a convicted murderer c) on the testimony of the victim's daughter who witnessed nothing d) despite the legal presumption that she innocent until proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt etc, etc The siege is the better to the two stories running by miles! |

Agree. I've always wondered how this whole thing got to court when it's all circumstantial evidence... therefore the jury have to return a verdict of not guily because there is doubt! |

Now there was a soap villain that you could take seriously. I always say that as well. He was quietly menacing! There's one scene when he is terrifying Rita, blaming her for him going to jail, and it's just brilliant. Barbara and Mark were as well. Richard Hillman was nothing more than a panto villain. All that was missing was the cape and the twirly tashe, many people used to say! Tony Gordon seems to be more RIchard Hillman than Alan Bradley.. |
