I want to watch the world cup in HD, but Dont have the terrestrial HD channels listed on the epg.

I know the box is HD, with a hdmi connection, so why can I not view the freeview HD channels?

And yes, I am in a freeview HD area.

From what I can see the BT Vision is only an uspcaling box and does not support DVB-T2 which is needed to decode the Freeview HD channels..

BT Vision HD content is only the on demand part, currently the freeview side is not HD. As mentioned the decoder/receiver on the current boxes do not support HD

Whoops!

BT Vision gets all the live content from Freeview... only the decoder for DTT can't manage DVB-T2. What a cop-out of a service!

I find BT Vision great and not a cop-out. The box is free after all!

The DVB-T2 standard hadn't been developed at the time the BT Vision box was designed, therefore it is hardly a cop-out that Freeview HD is not available on it.

Supposedly, a new Freeview HD BT Vision box is being lined up for a future launch - the service would die without it!

How daft of BT not to include a DVB-T2 tuner when the box was released 3-4 years ago

Or more relevantly, how daft of BT not to include a DVB-T2 tuner when they released a new version of the box only a few months ago.

That box is pretty much just a cosmetic update pending the new HD DVB box.

Was that a late response to other manufacturers releasing upscaling boxes some two years ago? Seems a bit pointless in today's market.

No the original box has always upscaled, the most recent box is greener (something to do with the hard drive) and is slightly different in other ways (I think it's missing an RF?) It's also black to compliment the new home hubs!

acoording to a poster in another thread who claims they work for bt, bt are releasing a new home hub and a new bt vision box which is freeview hd compatable in january next year, he seems to think as well that if we already subscribe to bt vision then we would have to pay full whack to get the new box

That would not surprise me at all (the having to pay as existing customers), I know I struggled to get the v2 HH sent and it was only on threat of cancelling my subscription they agreed to send me one. Might have to consider just getting a Freeview HD box if this is the case.

would not mind paying a small token for it, but not full price, mind you i will be out of broadband contract next january, and i already out of bt vision contract, so i will use it to my own advantage and try to get both free

I've just come back from Tesco and they have their own brand Technika HD Freeview boxes at £100. I know this means another box and outlay, but it would come in as a secondary box after the World Cup. Plus if BT do get Sky Sports would also be handy when the main BT Vision box is being dominated by all the extra sport. The extra £10 I pay for Sky Multiroom saves alot of "tense moments"

£90 if you don't take any Vision package.

The change to HD DTT (DVB-T2 tuner), takes time and the price of the chip will drop. Yes there are devices now out there that will do this, but I never pay first generation (got to be first). Prefer to wait for 2nd generation when a lot of the bugs have been fixed.

Just look at the current pricing for DVB-T televisions which have now dropped significantly.

Not really, it does exactly "...what it says on the tin"

I got my Silver box at the weekend from a car boot.
Last night it was upgraded and this morning the opening screen read

BT Vision HD the client software has moved up from v830 to 835.

Is this new or am I just catching up with the rest of the Vision world.

My choice of stations is limited and I cannot see any HD marked stations on the EPG.

HD is a reference to the HD On Demand content that is available.

The silver box was developed before the broadcast standard was agreed for terestrial HD transmission and the 2nd generation box (black) should be pretty much thought of as the same box with a different case.

The tuners for HD will come down in price and when BT launch the next box you can pretty much guarantee it will have it.

As per this thread you cannot get any HD stations as the box was produced prior to the standard being set. A new box is due which will enable DVB-T HD stations to be viewed (assuming digital switchover has happened in your area).

You can however watch films and TV programs in HD albeit that they are downloaded before you play them. A list of HD programmes are in the on-demand guide.

Thanks guys.

Strange that they would change the logo on startup - perhaps the earlier version I was running could not handle the 'on demand' HD.

I would use the term "on demand HD" very loosely here - BTVision has lots of on demand content but I wouldnt say you can watch HD content on demand as you need to download a good chunk of it first before you can start watching which is not really the same thing

Thanks for that - I know very little about BT Vision - particularly its technicalities. It is somewhat acedemic as Iprobably will not use the 'on demand' facility as I am a right skinflint and do not wish to swell BT's coffers any more than I need to.

Also, perhaps my eyesight is fading as I can see no real improvement in HD over a well setup standard system on a good TV. That is from looking round Come & Currys, And asking the right questions as well

On Demand might not be something you fancy just now, but if it's bundled into a pack it is good.

On a deal it works out on average at roughly £13 a month with ESPN included. If yer a skinflint - then i would suggest that all the on demand content plus ESPN at that price is good value (if getting a sports channel floats yer boat).
