I hate it people say, that isn't real music, there's no instrument or they didn't write thier own lyrics, the list continues. So it can't be real music.

There is no such thing as real music in my opionion becasue a recording machine and a guitar are both musical instruments, that get manipulated by humans to create sound.

yes, loosely.

i get aggrevated by fans of different music genres denouncing other music genres, ie a rock fan thinks "that hip hop shit isn't REAL music", or an r'n'b fan thinks "all dance music is shit and repetitive.

i think that indie fans are the worst, especially 17/18 year olds. personally i blame NME for installing that exclusive, dismissive, music snobbery attitude in young people.

and to be honest, people that say "so-and-so isn't PROPER music" just remind me of my mum, always going on about how modern music is "just noise" and how it was better in her day.

i think it's a good thing that many people these days seem to have varied and eclectic music tastes, and can appreciate a good song/musician regardless of the genre.

I think people should just enjoy the music they like regardless of anything else. There is no need for all this pretentious nonsense.

I agree. Also, when people post thier opinions and they are often dismissed/mocked if they don't like singers/bands which are thought of as 'legendary' or if they admit to liking modern mainstream music. Some people think their opinions are facts and more valid than other people's.

To be honest I don't think that the most minimal, non-tune-based dance music is "real" music because it has no function away from a club. But then someone else will say that there should be more of that kind of music on the radio. Anyone who remembers John Peel will know that he used to play some very minimalist Detroit techno alongside more obviously alternative rock tracks. Sometimes he would play a "song" that had absolutely no melodic components, just a pounding 4/4 beat, nothing other than a drum machine thumping away. Is that "real" music? How do we know?

It's real music in that it exists, and someone created it. Something is either real or imaginary - there are no degrees of realness.
With genres of music you're not familiar with, it can take a while to "tune in" to what you're listening to, and actually hear what's going on. I'm not actually a fan of minimalist techno, but I have heard enough to know that there are a lot of little shifts and tempo changes and noises lower in the mix, which you don't hear at first.

Sounds to me like some of the stuff Richie Hawtin used to make in the 90s, that was very minimalist techno which probably didn't make a lot of sense outside of a club environment, but which was absolutely fantastic in the right club with the right, err, "atmosphere."

Still very much "real" music, but just designed for a certain environment.

To some people there is real music and manufactured music. I don't know why the word real was chosen, but I think the term real music means music that was made using instruments, sung without vocal enhancements, written by the artists who made it, and made by people who had to work to get into the industry.

Manufactured music is music that is made using studio equipment, enhanced vocals, songs that were written by others, and/or artists who got into the industry because of reality TV or contacts they know.

I accept that the definitions I have provided may not be fully accurate, and I also accept that a lot of real music is made using the techniques of manufactured music. I know most real music isn't made by all of an act recording their song live.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that not all indie music and not all alternative music is real music.

I don't judge music on whether it is real or not. I think that real musicians are more talented than manufactured musicians, but I don't think that all real music is better than all manufactured music. I think there is manufactured music in the charts that is better than some real music that is not in the charts, and there is real music that is not in the charts that is better than a lot of the manufactured music that is in the charts.

I think "real" if often a substitute for talent and skill.
