Possibly this question has been raised before, but I have not been able to trace a thread, so here goes.

I am located in Denmark and currently using a sky box with sky card for Freesat service. I would like to buy the Humax Foxsat HD with built in hard drive.

Does anyone have any experience of using this equipment overseas or knows of any problems that I might experience.

Complete and utter novice at all this tech stuff so some help and advice appreciated.

If you can receive the UK PSB channels like BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 etc from Astra2D there should be no problem at all.

I use Freesat+ in Munich, Germany. In order to be able to use the BBC iPlayer you'll need some smoke and mirrors but otherwise it works fine overseas. Heavy rain can be an issue sometimes,

I am getting all of the above plus many channels more with the exception of 5 because I have not updated my skycard.
I have a huge dish (well hidden from sight thankfully) so hopefully I will be o.k.

Thanks all for your advice and links.

Channel 5 is available free to air using add channels on 10773 H (It's the version on the freesat epg)

You'll have no problem, I doubt you even need a large dish, unless you live in Greenland.

We were advised to have a large dish when we moved here. My son had at one time sky but had only a small dish and lost out on a few channels, including BBC, so we decided to take his advice. We also live in the middle of woods so we didn't want to take any chances.

We get great reception, with the exception of BBC2 but only when there is heavy rain or snow storms. I wouldn't be changing over to Humax Freesat HD but having HD tv and BBC1 going HD soon it seems to make sense.

I've heard of one being used in Stockholm, but I don't know the dish size.

Just one very minor point about using a Foxsat outside the UK. There is no way (as far as I'm aware) to set the clock to your particular timezone hence the EPG and front display clock always show UK time.

Just a minor irritant and you get used to it, but it caught me out a couple of times when I first got mine (I'm in France).

And it is even worse in non-Freesat mode on European channels - the clock shows a -2 hour difference. Since you can't use the timer in non-Freesat mode it is of little or no consequence but just thought I would mention it.

Thanks for the tips. I won't tear my hair out trying to set the clock to Danish time.

Here in SW France we get great reception with a 80cm dish (signal strength:100%, Quality:100%).

Have Iplayer set up and working using smoke and mirrors (pptp + persistant routes) - broadband speed 7mbs - you need at least 1mbs, 2 for HD.

I would not expect any Freesat box to support different timezones. - it's basically a UK box using UK schedules and EPG.

Did you buy the Humax on line or when you were in the UK? I have yet to buy mine but not going back to the UK until October.

What size dish do you use?

See http://www.brymar.co.uk/info/Astra/astra.html for dish sizes (other sites also show this info). The sizes are the min required - larger will give better signal strength and quality.

I have my dish, a large one and the reception and picture I am getting is great.

Wondered if you bought your Freesat box via the internet as I am yet to buy mine.

I will probably do the same and save myself the price of a suitcase on Ryanair!

Thanks everyone for your help and kindness.
