Oh, it is, in fairness. As for anyone with an interest in sports, well, a hell of a lot of such people are fairly inarticulate and not notable for the extent of their vocabulary. It isn't a word that is often deployed in conversation by the average sixteen-year-old either.

Seriously, it might be a big word, but it is also very a commonplace one.
