Is the iBooks store up and running in the uk version yet? Is it possible to see what's available, prices etc without having an iPad?

My mums thinking about getting one mainly for reading books but i can't seem to find anything on itunes to check prices or if her favourite authors are available.

Not yet, not till later this month, 24th I think, it's when the iPhone 4 goes on sale anyway, that's when Apple will flick the switch.

Either then or when iOS 4 is released on 21st June.

Thanks the replies.

At the moment her favourite authors are probably Marian Keyes, Jodi Picoult, Cecelia Ahern, Maeve Binchy, Stieg Larsson and Dennis Lehane.

All pretty popular and I think most paperbacks from them can be bought in Amazon for £4-7 so just interested in the prices of downloads.

Yes the iBookstore was up on the day the iPad launched in the UK. You cannot see it unless you have an iPad. There is not a very big selection at all at present. There are lots of free books, but amongst the paid ones, the selection is poor at present.

You can use the Kindle app on the iPad and buy books from amazon but I would recommend your Mum to get a Sony Reader PRS-300 for £150 as the e-ink display is great for reading books and it supports the open epub format.

iBook Store is device only I think. I don't think they are doing an interface for it in iTunes X are they? You can buy books already, that much is certain.
