when I made my complaint a few years ago I received a cheque for £24 compensation and I was totally unable to prove the value of what I had lost (due to it having been stolen). I expect if I had written back and complained again stating that £24 was a rather paltry sum given the inconvenience etc, they might have increased their offer, but at the time I accepted it.

There is no spelling mistake I think the point they are making is that it is a small minority doing this.

They don't Jeff but they don't care, they open, no money, card gets shredded.

But some workers have the gall to steal then still delivery it with a accidental damage note as Pat's son has found out.

My Mum is elderly and getting frail now so she sends me cheques to cover all of us on our birthdays, plus Christmas and including the odd gift here and there if she has saved up some money (she saves the money, buys what she wants and then splits the rest between the siblings, bless her).

So that's a lot of cheques sent in a year....and every single one of them, every single damn one over several years arrives with the corner lifted - without fail. They obviously see a cheque and don't bother, but seeing what you put there I had to write this as I bloomin well knew it wasn't a coincidence

Several years ago my son waited in all day for his birthday cards to arrive. They never came. We established that there was £50 from various relatives in the missing cards and complained to the Royal Mail. They refused to make any payment.

I then complained to what was then Postwatch (it's now Consumer Focus) and they investigated and agreed that there were grounds for the Royal Mail to pay, but said that "disappointingly" the Royal Mail declined to do so. This area (Chiswick) had such a bad reputation for post theft that at one time some online companies refused to accept orders from W4 post codes. I believe the problem was sorted but officially the Royal Mail never accepted responsibility for all the items that went missing.

I hope the OP gets a result but it's not the Royal Mail's policy to accept the consequences of its actions.

Believe me, in some areas it is quite a large segment of post office workers who steal money and gift cards.

12 postal workers were sacked last year not too far from where I live. Apparently they had a small palm held device that detected money and gift vouchers.

My kids have been the victim of this also. My husbnd's aunt put money in the post for Christmas 3 years in a row, despite me telling her not to do it. We never saw a penny of it.

I knew this went on as I have been a victim of it once or twice myself, however to hear it is so common and widespread is shocking. It's unfair of people to simply say "Well it serves people right for posting cash" - no it doesn't, we should be able to trust the RM to handle cash, and NOT to thieve it.

Yes you're absolutely right, we should.

We should be able to trust people not to steal in all sorts of situations but we can't, sadly. It is surely sensible to minimise our risks as much as possible.

I have to be a little careful, I know our post mistress takes a look occasionally at my DS threads so don't want to offend and she is a close friend of Mrs. S. and between the two of them it would be hell on earth for me.

Damn when I think about it I think she helped deliver one of our kids.

But it does seem to me these kind of money thefts increase around Easter and Christmas time.

It's not always a corner tear, it is possible to remove a letter or it's contents simply using, with a minor mod', one of these.

I thought all 1st class items were insured for up to £41 anyway.

Appreciate that you would need proof of posting for thsi, but I always wondered how you could prove the value of the contents.

It's been going on for many many years, which is disgraceful- someone should have condected a national inquiry and recemmended changes in provcedures at sorting offices to stop the scumbags from ruining (e.g.) kid's birthdays!

I think that one thing which doesn't help is that a lot of temporary agency staff are used in sorting offices in some districts.

There was a documentary on earlier in the year about RM and it showed on there that people steal from envelopes. It's known in the sorting centres but it 'goes unnoticed'. In years gone by the police would have been called in to deal with it. It IS a criminal offence and by choosing to ignore it, the superiors in the sorting centres are just as guilty.

Do they not have CCTV in sorting offices ? If not, then they should - that would surely solve the problem. Of course, it wouldn't stop the delivery postman doing it.

lets face it, Royal Mail seem to employ any old riff raff nowadays, Im lucky if I have the same postman for a month.

I think they do, in the documentary it showed how one guy slipped cards etc into his uniform and went to the loos to slice them open and take the money.

OP, I wish you luck with this. When it happened to my children I only went as far as the local PO and that excercise was about as useful as a choccy teapot. I bitterly regret not taking it further, but the items simply didn't arrive through the letterbox. They told me without proof of posting there was nothing they could do.

I remember that doc- I belive all the management did was sack the odd person and then employ more agency staff.
