Paying for an 18 month contract in advance
iain

Probably a dumb question, but is it possible to sign up for a contract, and pay it all in advance?

You'd still be billed each month because of over-spend, though I don't see why you couldn't pay 18 months worth when you get your first bill, putting your account into credit.

Don't set up a regular payment, or direct debit, because they might still take the money even if you're in credit.

Ah, OK - basically I've not long been self employed, so not sure I'd get the credit - but I was looking at the new iPhones.

Unless I'm missing something, O2 recycle would pay @£250 for a 3GS, which would virtually cover the cost of a new one on a contract.

I still think they'd need to credit check you, unfortunately.

If you've got the 3GS, can't you do it as an upgrade to avoid the credit check?

O2 will probably just ask for a security deposit, maybe £100 maybe £150 if your credit rating is not that good.

the 3GS is on PAYG. the thing that should hold me back is the lack of a 64GB model so far.

but its just so shiny

although does address the main shortcomings with the 3GS - the screen resolution and the not so great camera.

Hi Ian are u going for a business tariff? I have one and they are much better value for money. I have t-mobile business unlimited and I vet everything unlimited for 30 quid.

Unless you have a bad credit rating because of issues in the past I think you should be OK.

I got my first contract in my name at 18 so had next to no credit rating. I don't think the mobile phone one is a strict.

I did when I first went from PAYG to a contract. Paid 12 months of line rental so if I couldn't pay my overspend bill (was a student at the time) I would still be able to receive calls/texts. This was ten years ago though so don't know if you still can.

O2 generally asks for a deposit if you don't have good credit (for whatever reason).

They then use that deposit to pay off your first few bills.

Its not your first bills they use it for, they keep it for 3 months normally and then, obviously, you'll have paid 3 months worth of bills.

You can then either have the deposit back in a lump sum or indeed use it to pay off future bills - so technically get 3/4 months free line rental depending on your tariff price.

When i first stepped into the world of pay monthly, i got a sim only contract with o2 on a 30 day contract. I used this for 3 months and then upgraded to a full pay monthly contract with a free phone.

I think doing it that way helped me as i was a minimal risk to the network as i didn't have a phone from them(just a sim), i could have got out of it at any time, but i stayed with them, and i paid in full every months, which helped prove i am a good customer.

I remember an offer with the 3310 years ago. It cost £200 but included 12 months of line rental in advance and x amount of minutes a month, anything above that and you topped up with pay and go vouchers.
