iphone Simplicity used in non iphone question
denzil28

I've asked this on the two current popular iphone threads but not getting a definitive answer, so apologies if you've read this before but there really is a lot of posts to sift through on those threads and my question seems to get lost each time I ask it.

I see on the o2 website we can still sign up for the existing iphone simplicity 12 months with unlimited data. So if I sign up to that today or in a weeks time I should still be able to bag unlimited data for the next 12 months as it is a 12 month agreement.

I don't current have an iphone, but will have the new one on 24th June. I current have Simplicity 20 on my SEW850i with unlimited data, which I could just leave as is and port it over to a Micro SIM on 24th, but I wouldn't get free wifi or visual voice mail and I can save £5 by dropping down to the £15 tariff.

I can 'upgrade online using my existing SIM so just a simple switch over on my account to the new tariff.

The big question is will this work in my SE for the next week or so before I get the iphone.

Someone has pointed out that the iphone uses a different data stream and that i might get charged for data should I use the standard data stream on my SE.

It should be OK for calls and texts as I believe those are standard. I just need to know if I will just not have to use the internet or send any MMS for the next couple of weeks.

Looking forward to someone being able to confirm the situation so I and others can hopefully bag a good deal whilst they still last.

Hopefully someone will be bored enough on a Friday afternoon and not interested in the World Cup (yawn) to answer this question

Just change the APN to the iPhone one and you will be OK. I've used the standard web APN on my iPhone and I've not been charged either.

APN: idata.o2.co.uk

OK. Just so I get this right. As long as I change my phone settings depending on the type of tariff I go for I should be ok to go either way. A non iphone SIM in an iphone also as long as the data stream is set to match that of the tarriff I have?

Thanks for your response. I didn't think the idata stream would work on an ordinary phone, but I suppose it's just 3g data so no reason for it not to.

I nearly went for the iphone simplicity £15 but chickened out right at the last moment.

The o2 website says not recommended for non iphone use.

Apart from data, which I suppose I can live without for a week if I couldn't get it to work, would I have to change any settings on my phone to send a and receive texts and calls or should it just carry on working as is.

I should point out that I am not getting a new SIM now just upgrading online to the iphone tariff so not going to physically touch the phone just a switch over by 02 (obviously I'll be needing a new micro SIM when the iphone 4 is here).

It's really tough to get a definitve answer for something that I thought would be a fairly simple thread to respond to.

Plymouthbloke was kind enough to advise about the data settings. But I just want confirmation if I will be able to call and text if I can't be bothered with the data settings for now?

One of you must have broken their iphone and put the SIM in an old phone for a week or two. Did it work straight away or did any settings (apart from data) have to be tweeked?

The iPhone is nothing special - it is just another GSM phone. So yes, calls and texts will work.

Great, thank you. I'm going to shut down data on my phone for a week just in case I get it wrong and bite the bullet and go for the current iphone simplicity 15 for 12 months. That way I should be able to bag unlimited data for the next 12 months, by which time there will be more wireless hotspots and I won't be playing with the phone quite so much as I will in the first few months.

Calls text and net will work without problem. I used my sim in a cheap phone when I damaged my old one and was waiting replacement and all worked as normal.

Thanks for the info. I've changed to the iphone 15 for 12 months so have managed to bag my unlimited data for a year at least.

The change has gone through as I can see the new tariff online and interestingly enough my data connection stopped showing on the signal bar.

Worth doing if you are able to upgrade or change you tariff today, not sure how much longer they will let people opt for it prior to 24th June.

Denzil, I've done the same thing (switched to 12 month iphone simplicity deal, although won't have the phone until 24th).
If you switch your APN over to the iphone settings like PlymouthBloke1974 suggests you should get your data connection back. (Working fine on my HTC Hero.)

Cheers, I did do exactly as suggested in the end at all is working fine.

Would recommend this to anyone wanting to snag unlimited data for next 12 months whilst they still can.

Just need to get it ported over to a SIM/Micro SIM now with time to spare before the big rush (see my other thread about Micro SIMs being issued if you have any news or anything interesting to add).
