Roaming with the Desire

Is there anyway to get the email/calender/contacts working over wifi when roaming with the data services turned off? Internet worked fine through safari as did other internet apps, but the 'in-built' stuff would not work.

Or is it safe to turn data services on when connected to wifi? (I need to be sure that it won't start using 3G)

If roaming is disabled, it simply won't try to initiate a data connection, so it is safe to leave data aervices and background syncing on - it will just do so when you are in a wifi zone.

If you have your apps set to update - say every half hour - and the data's off and you are not in a WiFi area they won't update obviously....
So when you do get into a WiFi hotspot and the phone picks up a connection would it recognise that the last scheduled update didn't happen and force an update or would you have to hope that you happen to wander into a WiFi hotspot when an update is due?

Good question, and one which I don't quite know the answer to. The "always-on" connections - ie. Google Calendar, Contacts and Mail - will pretty much sync when they detect a connection. Things like Friend Stream and Weather and such like, I don't actually know, although I would assume that they probably wouldn't update until they were next scheduled to.
